Listening to/looking at/touching symbols and mentally interpreting them into a narrative are all active processes, and as noted elsewhere quite cognitively similar.

I'm not disagreeing with you that they all achieve the purpose of imparting information - I can learn by listening as well as by reading. I just don't personally consider the two to be synonymous. If you do, that's fine with me.

Different people process things in different ways. Listening to someone reading text is one way. Reading yourself is another. Different strokes for different folks. Do what's right for you.
Audiobooks don't work for me. |

I read faster then I can listen and my life consists of unpredictable interruptions so I find ebooks a better fit as lifting my eyes from the screen to respond to a request is far less disruptive than having to pause an audiobook so that I can pay attention to the request.
I find it easier to read an ebook in the snitches and snatches of time I can grab for myself then to listen to an audiobook. I think that listening to a book read (or a lecture) may be different then reading the book (or lecture transcript) but I don't think it's necessarily inferior or even easier for everybody. Plenty of the comments here seem to indicate the opposite. As for cheating, I have problems focusing and following along with lectures even interesting ones so was it cheating to take notes or better yet buy the professor's lecture notes? It was and is worthwhile to work at improving my ability to retain information given orally but that's not quite the same thing and if it's necessary information then it would be remiss of me not to ensure that I have it on me in written form. And if it's just for solitary enjoyment then thoughts of cheating are irrelevant. |

For me the jury is still out there as far as audiobooks are concerned. What is clear in my case is that I can't multitask while listening to an audiobook. I still retain hope of being a regular listener. I look forward to being a faithful client of audible.

I agree that not everyone can listen to audiobooks but that does not mean that it isn't a worthy medium for people who a) enjoy it and b) cannot read themselves due to physical or learning disability. It is a well documented fact that dyslexics are better at comprehending texts presented aurally rather than orthographically. Reading is not superior to listening and comprehension occurs via both mediums equally. |

A lot may depend on the the nature of what is being read/listened to. Listening to someone describing an issue and giving their opinion on a subject, might be the same as an audible experience, as it would as a reading experience. Whereas listening to a novel provides a different inflection and nuance than I may be likely to apply while reading the text.
