That is a PW-1.

The most recent firmware is 5.6.1.1, there is no 5.6.5 firmware for the PW-1.

The jb version that is on the device now will probably survive but it would not hurt to install the most recent (K5) version from:

After installing the Amazon update to 5.6.1.1 you will have to use KUAL and its extension MrPI to install packages.

DO NOT do a 'factory reset' just yet - I am pretty sure there is a way to over-ride the parental controls password.

I can not recall what it is at the moment, so . . . .

or, search Amazon's forum -
or, check the directions (Kindle User's Guide - it should be on-line somewhere) -
or, wait a bit for someone who knows to post the answer here.

alright, so just install "K5 JailBreak (5.0.x - 5.4.4.2)" and let the kindle update online to the most recent version?

I used advanced search to look here, everything that mentions parental controls, either doesn't have anything to do with disabling them, or they show a way to factory reset..

kindle support says to enter a special password that factory resets the kindle...

forums suggest deregistering it from amazon.com and reregistering it on the kindle... I did that, parental controls disappeared when I deregistered, when I registered they showed up again...

IIRC - that is 'a special password that resets the password' not 'resets the Kindle'.

If it just resets the password, the password would be obsolete, since anyone could reset it...

(almost) any update-*.bin packages will have to be re-installed after the upgrade, so . . . .

Just install the newest K5 jailbreak -
Then the Amazon update -
And if anything gets broken (expect a few things to break) - just use KUAL with the MrPI extension to re-install them (both are sticky threads).

Note: MrPI allows you to 'batch' install a group of packages rather than do them one at a time.

will this procedure(5.6.5 jailbreak) still work for those pw3s?
or is there a different way?
is downgrading to 5.6.5 possible?

I am thinking of ordering a rubber stamp for that set of answers.

I do like my PW-3, but I still have three PW-1 kindles sitting here, in-use, with several more waiting to be fixed.
I don't consider the PW-1 to be 'old and useless' at all.

Yeah I kept my hacked-up PW1 because of KOreader installed on it while waiting (and waiting, and sloooooowly getting used to default margins ) for PW3/fw 5.6.x to be discovered/released. With all intention of selling my PW1 once PW3 get all the same hacks and apps (KOreader for non-ficition PDFs)... but then made a mistake of giving my PW1 to my father So no selling it now.

No, this FW 5.6.5 jailbreak method does NOT work for a KV with FW 5.8.1.
