I went with #3. I mostly focus on taking the extra stuff out of the title (if it's a series, then that's for the series column, etc), and simplifying the tags. Hyphen Reader lets you change the cover in-app, so I leave that to do in there if for whatever reason I can't get the cover to change in Calibre. I don't mess with the files themselves otherwise.
As for organizing... Calibre - Read (Checkmark for Yes), Published, Title, Author(s), Rating, Tags, Series, and color coding. I went all in on customizing the Calibre UI to the point that I use a custom font and icon set. ![]() |

I verify the metadata, make sure the cover pic is good and, if the book is part of a series, change the title to show the series name and book number, such as "Sacketts 01 - Sackett's Land". That way I can easily search for a title and all the series show together when I sort.

I do not do much to change the metadata. Just select the best cover according to my choice, put a proper series info, if any, and that's all. That's why I went with choice #3 in the poll.

So, who's the one who voted for rebuilding the entire book from a plain text-file? You should start looking for help

Since I'm mostly a library borrower, I rarely have the opportunity to organize books.
For the few books that I purchase, I usually remove metadata since inaccurate and inconsistent metadata drives me up the wall. A small number of books also get a new cover, usually from the store itself. (Why do stores get the rights to use the cover art, yet publishers do not get the rights to embed it in the book?) Purchases from my Kindle days have also been converted to ePub. |

I tidy up the metadata (author name, subject, publication data), add a decent cover if the publisher has provided a generic image (hang your head in shame Random House!) and ensure the series data (if any) is correct. All this is done in Sigil. Titles are then transferred to my Calibre library and then to one of my liseuses. Needless to say, DRM is stripped off as well.
Have to confess that I then bookmark any typos and correct these after the first reading. |
