But you'd expect Amazon to do it well instead of poorly.

I am, however, interested in the statement that I emphasized above. Have you ever found a general book store that separated the Fantasy from the Science Fiction? (I'm not talking about specialized stores like Baen)
There are books that fit just in SF and there are books that fit just in fantasy. Those are the ones that should have their own categories. The rest and be mixed.

Mystery, thriller, & suspense is another rubbish joining of categories that should remain separate. Another HUGE mistake is comics & graphic novels. To people who read either category, they are not the same. Not even close.

In fact, NONE of the combined categories are correct. They don't work.

This is not just Amazon. But Amazon is the big one that should be leading the way and showing others how to do it correctly instead of how to do it all wrong.

I have seen other big corporations with worse search engines.

My question was what store DOES do it correctly? If I was looking for an example of a book store that did search the best, I wouldn't look to Amazon, I would look to the company that specializes in search...Google. Unfortunately, while Amazon will allow you to separate Science Fiction from Fantasy, (at least in terms of a category search) Google will not.

And it really is dreadful when we rely on the search engine to find what we want.

Jeeeez, can you not go on the Kobo forum and moan about the rubbish search on kobobooks.com or something instead of continually turning every single thing into an excuse for you to have a go at Amazon! It's bordering on the ridiculous at times.

Did you look at the advanced search at all? Science Fiction and Fantasy are separate categories.

As to how effectively they're separated will depend on how the publisher categorized them. One big problem and it's not Amazon's fault is that publishers tend to tag a book with every possible genre that it could be a part of and then some. I've even seen books from various fiction genre's categorized as non-fiction.

Go ahead. I know Kobo's search is rubbish. Are there any places that sell eBooks that actually have a good search engine?

Why would Amazon need to improve their search? Do they not sell enough books the way it is? Amazon used to be a book store, now it is just another store that also sells books in one little corner.

The search is a generic search where nearly everything is included, including the kitchen sink.

I do searches by author name to check the "latest" or upcoming books on Amazon, Google & B&N; the search comes up with all kinds of authors & junk & the author being search is not even grouped at the beginning. The searching process has gotten much worst. Heck, the names aren't even close with either the 1st or last names being the same as the search criteria; nor the 1st characters the same as the author's.
