Actually that isn't why. Amazon has made it increasingly difficult to send out update notices. They used to just send a notice/email on request of the publisher/author. Now they inspect the book and the changes have to amount to more than just one or two typo corrections. If the changes are not "significant" they will not notify readers. If they are significant (by their standards) they will notify those who purchased. If they fall short of that, they will make the update available, but not tell readers (so if you have the "automatically accept updates" you will get the new copy. If you don't have that checked, a small indicator will show up on your manage kindle list for that book and you must manually decide to get the update).

For small typos or small format changes, no notification or availability is available for the reader.

I think authors were requesting updates for minor changes like a typo or adding books to a series list in the backmatter. Amazon will not notify for those anymore. To make them available can be nearly impossible for those who bought the book (I assume a reader who heard about it could request a new copy, but I'm not sure if that would work or not).

I do know it's pretty hard to get Amazon to send out an update and even after they inspect and decide to send it out or make it available, it can take 3 weeks or longer in some cases.

Don't know I reported one I had for 3 months. They asked if I want a refund I said Nope just let me know when its fixed & we can trade. 8-9 months later it was fixed they emailed me asking if I still wanted to trade or refund. We traded Hey it was part of a series I didn't want to break up a set

If it is outside the one week, you have to engage CS and have a reason (usually not just "I hated this book.") So, if there are formatting issues, readability issues or a lot of typos--things like that, you can still get a refund. The week period is automated. You can just check a box "typos" or "format" or whatever and it refunds.

Some people have reported that they gotten refunds just because they didn't enjoy the book, but circumstances are a bit vague there. It could depend on a number of things Amazon tracks (like how many things you've returned, or who you talk to or...who knows?)

If the book has been updated because of a known issue, you can get it replaced or refunded at any time. An author I follow had a book that was pre-order, but Amazon actually messed up the upload or delivery--when it went live, only the sample was sent instead of the whole book. It was a bit of a mess and the author had to work to straighten it out (By that time, several refunds had been issued, the author had been blamed...and even with notification, some people were leaving bad reviews for ages because they either ignored the notification or didn't want it because they didn't realize what was going on). There's been a couple of instances where something just doesn't work and it can take a while to work out. (Amazon has done this with audio books more than once. They take the audio that is loaded and create multiple tracks of their own liking--only in some cases they don't get the order of the tracks right and it's a big, fat mess.) So be aware you can get a refund for something that is a mess even if it is after the 7 days depending on the issues.

Audible is laughable when it come to fixing things. One of my ebook Audible book don't match up. they got the Credits at the end of audible But its at the beginning of the ebook. You Cant do the immersive.. I reported it to Audible they like sooo what I said FIX it so they both start at Chapter 1... most do. They refused. Acted like my fault

What I do is check file size and if the file size is different, I'll do a compare in Calibre's eBook editor and see what's changed. Sometimes the changes are worthless like in some Kathy Reich eBook, the changes were just to add in adverts for her other books. Sometimes it's the adverts and some actually corrections in the text.

I don't know if it is a new rule or an old one, but they do require that the text of the audible and the ebook be something like 98 percent the same or they turn down the audible upload (for those authors using Audible's upload program). It's one of the reasons I'm hesitant to create an audio book. It's not that I expect to do any real changes to the audio book, but things like that--where are the credits, what is the opening and that sort of thing. My ebooks have the "back blurb" in the front of the book, but I wouldn't normally expect that in the audio nor do I want to "add time" by reading that or the list of other books at the back. Maybe a short blurb about "find more books at..." or whatever, but the whole list? Doesn't make sense.
