I understand and I completely agree with you!

This is exactly what I want to do:
--Use Skype to speak to a person wanting to learn English
--Send them a URL containing a short story or online newspaper article
--Then I will read out loud to them while they follow along by reading the story/newspaper article on their PC screen

Thanks, but most of my Skype friends are from Asia/Europe so they won't be able to buy the ebook. That's why I was looking for a URL link for the ebooks instead of Kindle Ebooks.

I do believe that book is either at Kobo, B&N or Google Play.
I know that book was price matched.

To be honest, it's for both me and the other person. I also thought I'd be a better reader and be more passionate if I was reading something that interested me and I'd not have a boring monotonous tone to my voice.

I just want some stories we can read together that are available on a website.

There will be an ePub version to download from the library once you have "bought" it.

I'm sure you can find something appropriate that's in the public domain.

If you want to be able to have books that are freely downloadable/readable on a website, your best bet is Project Gutenberg, where there are many different formats of each book available, and you can also read the html format of the books directly in a web browser. https://www.gutenberg.org/

+1 to Shalym's suggestion of gutenberg.org.

You might also look at OpenLibrary.org for books that can be "borrowed" for two weeks and can be read online (or downloaded). Limit of 5 books can be checked out at one time. They have a lot of books much newer than Gutenberg --- be sure when you search to checkmark to "show ebooks only" or it will pull up lists of library paper books as well. (OpenLibrary is affiliated with archive.org, the Internet Archive.) Free registration is required to access the books, but it is painless --- only asks for a valid email to send your account activation link.

Books at archive.org can be freely accessed. When you search out and click to select a title, a smallish window displays the book --- click the "Search Inside" magnifying glass beside the display to read in a larger window.

https://www.hathitrust.org/ has a LOT of books in pdf that can be read online. Free access, but I'm not sure if access is worldwide or not.

If short stories sound like a better deal, try https://americanliterature.com/short-stories

But there are probably hundreds of sites out there offering "on-line" literature --- as a matter of fact, just google "read online" and be amazed at all the links that pop up.

Thanks so much for the advice!

I'm looking at this site now and I just wanted to check how I can be sure that the ebooks are the genuine article and haven't been changed?
Sorry if it seems like I'm being paranoid, but I don't think I am.

It just seems so easy for someone to make changes to an online ebook...? I need someone to tell me something to calm me down.

But this is the real problem I'm having: There's so much information on the internet that it's very hard to determine which is real and accurate information and which is just false...
