I keep about 5% of my ebooks on an ereader.
Last count total was over 8000. |

Maybe this should be mentioned more often in posts. The more we mention it the more often people will think of doing it, and Calibre is one of those super useful programs that certainly deserves support. Barry |

Once you realize that you can search through every book that you have on your device for words or terms your library comes alive. This is one of the reasons that I hope they will increase the storage on the next gen devices( I have outgrown my Kindle Voyage capacity.

... and the fact that you now have at least 2 SKU's and have to convince retailers to stock both, inventory both (including one which is likely going to move much slower at $40 more), extra inventory costs for the manufacturer etc. While it would seem like a simple solution it's likely not that easy. And at the crux of the problem is still the tiny subset of heavy users (who are a small subset of overall users) for whom the extra memory is must have feature. |

Actually, many Kobo users have shown that there are no s/w issues changing from a 2GB to larger size internal SD card.

I've read on Amazon's Kindle forum that the ereaders prior to the Voyage (or possibly just prior to the PW, I can't remember now) had slowdowns and/or crashes if the library was too large. Not just the library on the Kindle itself, but the entire library on the cloud. Some got to the point that the Kindle couldn't be used at all unless all wifi/3G was kept turned off.

I don't know WHAT causes the slowdown; I assumed it was poor database design. Maybe it's having 6000 items in the cloud instead.
But it definitely happens when I have more than 900 or 1000 books on the kindle itself (it varies a bit how many, probably by size of books). My kindle is a kindle keyboard, as I said. Maybe newer kindles don't have that problem. Anyway my point wasn't to argue about whether anybody else sees this problem or where exactly the problem is. My point was it wouldn't help to have larger flash if problems like this exist, where the software/OS doesn't handle large sets of data correctly. Last edited by misling; 10-30-2015 at 10:30 AM. |

The problem wasn't only with large numbers IN the reader. The problems were with large number of books in your account even if you kept only a few on your reader. It was definitely bad software design.

Now one search went slow and that was in "one" book on my fire. That book is huge. It was a version of the bible. |

Most of my readers now have fewer than 100 books on them after I ran into some problems and had to reset to the factory settings twice. Rather painful, but it fixed it. So, rather than reloading all of them, I just limit to current stuff. Like Harry, I like to keep a series together, but I keep the entire series on the reader. When I have finished a book, it goes into COMPLETED in case I need to refer to it while reading a later book. I currently have 2 series on my take-a-long kindle - one is a mystery series and the other science fiction, so I can have a choice.
Now, my choice might be different if I didn't have easy access to a computer at most times. It was kindof a pain when I was caring for a family member away from home and could only update my ipods/readers once every 3 weeks or so. I was just used to instant gratification - it really wasn't a big deal except for library books that invariably became available at times I had no wifi access (no smart phone here). I plan better now that I've had the experience. I also have multiple readers. ![]() |

It is an awesome feature that so few understand exists. Great if you have a lot of reference books.
