You are using windows XP with NTFS? If you open the archive instead of trying to extract, do you see the files at all? Last edited by acidzebra; 08-21-2008 at 10:37 AM. |

The internal folders are all there but when I try to extract (in Winrar OR in Winzip 11) I get these messages. I run Vista with NTFS and the problem happens whether I open or try to extract. I have successfully used this software (Winzip, Bitorrent, etc) many hundreds of times in the same ways and none of my settings have changed so I am very confused as to why this would be corrupted ......

![]() Have you tried extracting a single folder from the lot? edit: I just VPN'd into my home computer and extracted several folders to verify I am not crazy (I tested the files before publishing the torrent too) and everything works fine - and again I must cite the evidence of several others on this thread who have successfully extracted the files. So while I still have no clue about the cause, it must be on your end, despite previous experiences. Last edited by acidzebra; 08-21-2008 at 11:18 AM. |

RARing the content of a torrent is bad manners and bad form. There is absolutely no reason to do so. Also, if you want to help seed, you'll need twice the space (roughly) and forcing that upon users is not nice.

Seriously, cry me a river. Rar'ing those files saved me an enormous amount of bandwidth as I have explained and demonstrated at length - there is your reason right there. Re-downloading a corrupted file of a large set is much easier with rar. And frankly, you lost my sympathy and my ear when you claimed you don't seed rar'ed files 'as a kind of protest' - now THAT is bad form and bad manners. In addition, you didn't ask me - you TOLD me to go redo my torrent. Like you told the prshack guy that his new brilliant hack was no good because it didn't work exactly the way you like it, and he should redo it. I don't know how this type of autistic behavior works where you are from, but I will have none of it.

I have already explained to him that I am saving 1.26 Gb of bandwidth for every complete copy transferred by using compression. Right now I've doled out 15 complete copies - that is a non-trivial amount of bandwidth. Not to mention that the type of person who doesn't mind a 7.5 Gb archive sitting on his disk propably has some space to spare. I use RAR as it has a slightly better compression ratio than zip - if you are looking for a free, winzip-like program that handles most archive formats I highly recommend Tugzip - http://www.tugzip.com

Most torrent clients these days allow the user to pick & choose what files are wanted to be transferred. If they are all in a compressed format (RAR in this case), you cannot see what files there are and you cannot deselect the ones you do not want or select the ones you want.

Picking and choosing reduces total availability for a torrent and reduces the efficiency of the bittorrent mechanism - I consider this (and not seeding to at least a 1:1 ratio) to be bad form. In addition, I don't see people seriously going through 900+ folders and selecting a few. If you want just a few Gutenberg books, go roll your own - its easy enough. This is for people interested in bulk content and who have a few Gb to spare on their hard drives.

I downloaded this and left it seeding at about 200k/sec upload over the weekend. I think I had a rather good ratio by the time I switched it off this morning
![]() Many thanks to acidzebra for doing this and seeding so well. This will be excellent for when my Sony Reader ships next week. |
