Smile HOME SHARING is back in iOS 9

Because Apple removed Home Sharing in iOS 8.4, I stayed on 8.2 and patiently waited for 9.0. Apple "promised" to bring it back in 9.0, and they actually did!

My iPad Mini can easily store a couple thousand ePub's, since they are relatively small files. However, my 1500+ high bit rate MP3's were more than the Mini could handle. I keep them on my desktop (several terabytes of storage) and use iTunes to play them on my WiFi network iDevices through Bluetooth speakers.

I tried streaming the high quality MP3's from the cloud, but I have fairly slow DSL and had stutters/pauses in playback. My in-house network works perfectly, so I'm glad that Home Sharing has returned! Now I can give 9.0 a try.

iOS 9 made some changes to how apps update. Specifically they now can download only the assets necessary for your device, rather than have to include everything needed to run on all comparable devices.

I have one installed, but that is not what I prefer. I prefer Apple to create a decent, usable keyboard like every other OS does.

When I rotate the iPad, a different area of the image is visible on screen to adapt to the ratio, but the image size is unchanged (I measured it).
Here is what I get when I create my own backgrounds using the appropriate size. See attached. Notice how Mars and the word "Test" grow bigger when in landscape view. The size should stay the same just as it does with the stock backgrounds that are supplied.

When I use my own backgrounds, I always choose one that is in landscape. It won't ever show the entire shot in portrait mode but at the same time, it wont need to stretch for landscape.

I use a square wherein the landscape and portrait portions intersect in the center like a cross. The corners are just black as they don't get used. In theory this should work, just like it does on most any device, but for some reason iOS 7 through current screw up landscape unless it is one of their pre-installed backgrounds. Never figured out why, nor how to correct the issue. Perhaps Apple applies special code to their own backgrounds but not to customized ones. Oh well, I guess we are stuck with it.

LIve always done my phone updates OTA and my ipad2 updates via iTunes hard wired in and other than losing a paid app a few years ago I can't recall any issues.

I've been using iTunes with Apple devices for a while and really have had only 2 issues that bug me.

The first is they keep taking away the sidebar and it's always procedure to get it back. So much so I ended up keeping an old version saved and if I have issues and have to reload I can reload the h old version. I think it's 11.? Something

The other is the inability to go backwards. I really regretted updating my ipad2 past ios7. When it went to 8 it was almost DOA but I read there had been a few bugs so I waited for the next update. When that didn't fix it well enough it was too late to go back. I ended up turning off a lot of the visual features and just lived with it.

I have to admit it was a crap shoot going to 9 by I took a chance and it seems better. I know an older device won't live forever and they can't support it forever (like XP) but unlike iOS, XP you can still reload it and run it.

See if activating "Reduce Motion" has any positive/negative effect:

Go to: Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Reduce Motion -> ON.

No, that is for the parallax backgrounds and I always keep that turned off. It is some bit of coding somewhere that does not get applied to our custom backgrounds, or so I assume. There are a lot of websites claiming to know the "top secret" method to get them to work, but none of those websites are correct. There might be some apps that can generate custom backgrounds that work, but I've never found one that allows me to take my artwork and convert it. They merely want to generate colorful backgrounds on their own. I'm not interested in that, so I've never attempted to use any of those apps.

This is rather annoying to me. Prior to iOS 7 (I think) creating a square background of the proper size would rotate and not zoom on iThingies. This methiod also works fine with every Android device I've had plus some other devices. Not sure why Apple thinks they need to mess up our custom backgrounds, or if they are not doing it on purpose, why they won't fix the issue.

Check this site out during the Cowboys/Eagles halftime today, unless you've already "been there, done that" and it's not correct:

Another website with false information. I'm not sure why they post crap that doesn't work. I doubt most of these site even check the information, they just pass it on without verifying it. I've seen all kinds of tricks to make it work, but as I said earlier not one does work. And so much for his prediction that Apple was including a fix in iOS 7.1! They still haven't included the fix in iOS 9!

Yes, Swype adds numeric keys to the top row as long-press options. So that might work for some folks.

Unfortunately you can't input passwords with third-party keyboards.

One new feature I do like on the iPad is using the keyboard as a trackpad. I haven't played with it much, but it is working pretty well and gives me more control in making selections and refining them.

I'm really enjoying the "back to" feature myself.
