Those are two big "ifs." And, there are people out there who have crappy, constantly dropping dial up connections and people not in the Whispernet areas who might think that particular ad is just a bit misleading.

But ... hey, I assume you've got a Kindle and you are happy with it. I'm certainly happy with mine. I just don't happen to like dishonest/misleading advertising. And ... I know it when I see it.

I don't - I have a Cybook, actually. I just don't think that there's anything misleading or dishonest about that word choice.

Well, I own one, and I do. I've seen a lot of lawsuits (won by the consumer by the way) over verbiage that was less ambiguous than that.

If they had me looking over their shoulder, the words used would be "limited access" with a big ol' asterix and a disclaimer.

Except the access *isn't* limited - because by saying limited access, it would imply that Amazon puts a limit on how much/often you can access those books.

OK .... well, perhaps if I ever sell this house here in Texas, I'll advertise it as having "access" to all the museums and restaurants in Paris, France. I just won't mention that they (1) have to get in a car, (2) drive to the airport, (3) buy a ticket to France, and (4) fly there.

It's all "access" right?? And, all unlimited??

As long as the access is limited by either your online connection or your proximity to Whispernet ... it is still limited. If you can't access the books, you can't access them. No matter whether Amazon puts a limit on the number of books your could theoretically purchase or not.

Well, so much for that magazine's cred ... not that I ever read it. I mean, really, she's a lovely lady, but I couldn't give a diseased rat's patootie about what she likes or doesn't like.
Ah, Rickey Tickey Tavy I knew we were kindred spirits. I think its amazing that she can boost sales for whatever she's hawking, books or otherwise, just because SHE likes it.

I hate reality shows also, and sports, but of course, being married to an ex jock we watch a lot of football and Nascar. And baseball. I just tune it out and play on my laptop. I used to love watching Johnny Carson, but haven't tuned in to talk shows since he bowed out.

And maybe the ad should have read
"access to over 125,00 books when your kindle is connected and receiving properly....otherwise you are on your own searching for them thru Amazon...."
But that would imply advertisers tell the truth.....

Yes .... sigh ... it would. Either that or it would demand that the word "access" actually have some sort of practical meaning.

For me at least, the reality is I am only guaranteed "access" to those books I actually have on my Kindle at any one time. Any other books ... it's all "access in theory."

Um, no, that's not what I said at all. You couldn't advertise it as unlimited, because there clearly *are* limits. You could advertise it as access though - it'd be a silly thing to do but you wouldn't be actually lying, because as you said - your house does have access. Not convenient access, but access.

It's the adjectives that get people into trouble.

A better, imo, example would be if you joined a gym that was open 24 hours. You DO have 24 hour access to the gym - but it's not the gym's responsibility to pick you up and drive you there!

With the Kindle, you have access to xyz amount of books - with that line, they're pitching the volume of works available for the Kindle, not the ease of accessibility. If they'd said 'instant' or 'immediate' in front of that, they sales point would be about the delivery method.

No more limited than the access implied in the ad. Silly or not ... it's still true.

Just as often it's the lack of, or improper use of, those adjectives.

Or, apparantly to tell you that the front door is locked at night, and you actually have to scale a wall and go in via a second story window.

Then, perhaps if they had used the word "available" rather than "access" the ad would have been just a bit more honest.

Ok, this will be my final comment on this thread because this is the third time I believe you've implied things about me, personally - the first when you made the remark wondering about if I'm in advertising, the second that I was blinded by my Kindle-love and finally the sheer meanness in this last reply.

None of these are things that I've either said or implied. I'm sorry that you took my remarks personally, but Amazon IS using the word 'access' correctly, according to both the definition of the word and it's meaning as it's commonly accepted among most people.

Huh??? Well .... I'm not seeing it, but then we clearly have different definitions for words other than "access" and "availablity."

You can't take responsibility for something that had nothing to do with you. The above conversations were between two people arguing over the meaning of a word in a phrase.

I thought RM's replies were articulate and clever. You want to see meanness? Go to the "Blatantly political rant' site. Which is why I so try to stay away from discussing politics, religion or the origin of the cosmos.....
