Apache
I've always recommended https://Ninite.com

Although recently I caught on to https://Chocolatey.org which is much nicer IMHO, has a lot more apps too.

Note: It supports command-line and scripted install/update of calibre. Very nice for those who can't use my linux/OSX scripts.

The person who writes the .nupkg for a Chocolatey app has already put in the work to find out how to turn off the offers, or, find the hidden Enterprise installer without the bundled crapware.

I'm pretty sure I've been offered Chrome by the Windows version of the Flash installer.

You ever notice how the people who are the least likely to fall for the ol' addon "tools" installations are the ones who seem to get the most upset over them (and obssess over thwarting them)? I've never been in such a hurry to install a program that I couldn't take the time to carefully read what I was getting myself into. I like to read.

I'm not all that hot and bothered, it's just a nice bonus on top of having something approximating a simple `sudo pacman -Syu` and all OS components and software installations are silently brought up to date.

I was merely observing a potential "why" for Chrome's popularity, and then floated a random train of thought as part of a casual discussion.

Oh I wasn't singling you out. Your post just reminded me of the people that DO get hot and bothered by them. Like they think they have some sort of inherent right to click on buttons willy-nilly without any consequences or something.

Still... even those that got chrome on their machnes that way actually have to start USING chrome to add to it's popularity, no? Can it be silently made the default browser without ever launching it?

I personally think it's a bit of reach to imagine that the "add-on tools" technique is responsible for anything other than a tny portion of Chrome's popularity. It's much easier for me to believe that it's becoming increasingly popular because 1) people like it (or find it too convenient NOT to use; or 2) Android.

Oh, probably, but then again I have had problems on linux, where simply opening Chrome, accidentally or on purpose, would overwrite all my mime associations (default browser, file handler, scheme handlers...). I wouldn't put it past them (Chrome devs) to be rather aggressive about Chrome inviting itself in at the slightest encouragement.

Not that that is strictly a bad thing -- anyone likely to fall for this is also likely to be sticking with IE out of the same ignorance, so in this case Chrome can only be a good thing.

Chrome is a nice browser. I just happen to prefer Firefox. For the most part, it deserves to be as popular as it is, on sheer technical merit.

Also you get flash for free. (See? I knew there was a topic here, somewhere!)

I have all 3 browsers on my PC. My tablet uses chrome and only very few sites (looking at our local channels) open in mobile. Most are full sites.

As to flash, I don't know the last time I used it.

When I saw the header I thought for a moment that it referred to Flash Fiction.
