For the sake of throughness have you tried a different charger/method of charging? Didn't see it mentioned in the thread but I might have missed it.

Yes, I have used the wall socket as well as the cable connected to the PC. However, although some of those who commented on the thread have expressed doubts regarding the accuracy of the battery meter (in the sense that it showed a fully charged battery when the truth may have been different), I tend to assume that there was nothing wrong with the battery. I say that because prior to the mounting of the 3.17 firmware, I took care to fully charge the device. It would be rather odd that after charging the device for a couple of hours (and given that it was not fully discharge to start with), the battery could have been empty or that the process of factory reset took all the power in it...

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know! I am interested in exploring all the possibilities. Thanks!

The problem is that you don't know what is wrong. It is possible the device went into an endless loop and drained the battery. Or it could have shut itself off and is not using any power at all. If the screen still looks like the first post, you have absolutely no idea what the actual battery level is. This is why the first step of all the rescue instructions is to charge the battery. If the battery is flat, nothing you do will get a response from the device and the device will stay dead.

Also, if you have a bad usb cable, it might not actually be charging it at all.

This is not the case, it's the same cable that I use for my phone, but good observation

So, I have charged it for several hours and then I've tried the resuscitation manoeuvres...It seems completely dead and I am now over 80% convinced that it's not the battery.

In the meantime I have opened an incident with Kobo and I am now waiting for their more concrete answer. At a first pass, they have said a replacement is in order, but the next step is to be transferred to the guy that will - thoroughly - be in charge of my case. I still expect some red tape, but deep down I hope everything will work as smooth as possibly. We'll see. I'll keep you informed.

In the other thread someone suggests patience with the reset pin

The only solution is to be patient, try and retry the reset pin (during half an hour genarally), keeping the reset pin pressed for 2 or 3 seconds each time, again and again until magically it decides to power on.

@throsu,
It's a very frustrating "job" to switch the kobo back on when it's locked like that, I'm never patient enough and I always give up thinking that it's broken because it's so illogic that a reset pin don't reset !
Pressing a stupid pin, seeing nothing happening during half an hour is so frustrating and you feel like you're spending your time doing the most stupid thing on earth

If your problem is like mine, it could work... Good luck.

I experienced similar symptoms with an Aura. I had done no modification (FW 3.15) on a pretty new Aura. One day is froze, I did the reset routine and it would start, but then freeze part of the way through the process. It eventually froze and would not react. I charged and tried again - nothing.
I contacted Kobo (I bought the unit from their website since you cannot buy these in a US store) and they took me though the reset / charge routines again, and then had me send a photo (to show the screen was not broken), then gave me a return authorization.
About 1 day later, without the unit on charge I decided to push the buttons again - voila! It came to life. While I waited for the replacement it kept freezing, and I would have a similar experience - after leaving it sit it would start. Of course, I accepted the replacement and returned the Aura. I suggest letting it charge for a few hours and then letting it sit for a day.
You should get in touch with Kobo and start the process of getting a replacement before you run out of warranty coverage. I found them to be careful to make sure you really had a problem, but not hard to deal with and the return process was easy.

I didn't try to ask the replacement of my H2O because with my luck, if I send it back, they will try it and it will surely work like a charm and they will make me out to be stupid
I'm in 3.15.0, may be in 3.17.3 it will not happen again...

Dear myki, thanks for the encouragement! For the moment, I have tried to play with the device for more than half an hour, pushing continually the reset pin for 2,3,4 seconds, then releasing and back again. Apparently, you've been luckier than me 😊

As I have said in an eralier post, I am already in contact with Kobo, they have also asked for pictures of the front and the back of the device. From here on, I will wait for their verdict.

I will keep on trying reviving the device.

But, trust me, I have tried almost everything possible and I am quite thorough. On the other hand, I am not fearful that the device will work flawlessly once it'll reach the Kobo customer care or I'll be real stunned if it'll do. I really don't know what happened with it, but it seems that I will need a totally different kind of luck to bring it back to life...
