Seems to me I just read a note on the Amazon forum about one left in a car having screen damage. I wish you the best of luck while you keep doing this. It's August now which makes it a great time in the northern hemisphere to test your belief.

The replacement screen would cost almost as much as the reader itself; then you still have to assemble it and if you haven't done this before you'd probably break it. It's very hard to get at the display in the first place and then there's the light layer to consider ... it's just too complicated.

For some brands (that don't offer unbricking methods) you can find bricked ones on Ebay but for these it's simpler to just yank out their bricked electronics, put in your not bricked electronics, and thus have a working device without having to touch the display unit itself.

well, thanks again, guys for taking part in my post

to DNSB: no it did not happened in winter. I left it over night in the car, temp went down, then in the morning Ive changed location, a bit warmer, a bit moisture, and the glass got broken. My fault, I admit with shame, I didnt let it adapt to the new enviroment. Ive treated it like a tablet/mobile that isnt that sensible.

to Koboy: my friend wont charge me, however I dont know the costs of international justice events... However, I think that I should have been more advised from the company in inside manual/papers on how fragile these things are and what could happen in such conditions like mine. The temp difference wasnt much in my opinion, 10-15 degrees, but was enough for what happened.

to Sonist: Meera can say whatever, the screen wasnt damaged by something phisically. Period. Thanks for the support.

to frostschutz: how can I use it since there is no screen? can I connect it to a screen? I am a (proud) linux user since 2010 btw, can you be more speficic on how can I use it in another ways, please? Considering also selling it, but who would be interested in it, even at a low price?

JSWolf: not a satisfying answer. It could be done if they want to. They also could make some money out of it. Kindles are replaced even it is user fault like mine, I know cases, so this means there are more screens on the market than the actual products, no one makes 1 per 1, if you get my point. They just dont bother help. They put a 'sorry for the inconvenience' and expect you will buy another one from them.

I expect:

1- to get my screen replacet AT a decent price from Kobo

or

2- get a decent discount for another kobo ereader, or buy whats left of mine

to frostschulz again: I dont get "For some brands (that don't offer unbricking methods) you can find bricked ones on Ebay but for these it's simpler to just yank out their bricked electronics, put in your not bricked electronics, and thus have a working device without having to touch the display unit itself. " Can you be more specific please? Can it be connected to another not touchable screen? Even e-ink? Even if I loose the light or something else?

thanks all

Not directly, but you could export the framebuffer device over wifi and "view" the screen on any other device that would know what to do with that data. You'd have to modify the firmware to that effect, so you must know your way around Linux at a low level, I guess.

I don't know if a mod like that exists, it would be the reverse of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiUEdmR5Vxg

Of course, it kind of defeats the purpose for reading...

I'm actually working on something similar, a RemoteControl mod that allows to do page flips using USB cable, magnet sensor, power button, or over wifi in a web browser. Not sure if I'll export the entire screen via the web browser… also not sure when I get around to it.

Using screens of other devices is usually not possible. Even if you find one with the same technology/resolution, the connector will likely be different, as well as the cable (location of the connector within the device).

"I don't know if a mod like that exists" - well, can it be done practically? or just theoretically

"Of course, it kind of defeats the purpose for reading... " - yes but it would have some purpose, now it hasnt one

"Using screens of other devices is usually not possible." - makes sense...

I'd suspect the moisture was not the cause of the damage but rather an indication of a sudden temperature change which caused the damage.

As for treating it like a tablet or mobile phone? My son had the display of his Sony phone crack several years back. He and friends went to play ball hockey at a local park and he left his phone under his jacket in the back seat of the car on a warm summer day. When he returned to the car a couple of hours later, he picked up his phone to check for messages and saw the screen had cracked. Oddly, neither Rogers nor Sony were willing to discuss a warranty repair/replacement on a 4 month old phone despite the expensive "it covers everything!" extended warranty he had purchased.

There's documentation in the box that gives you that information.

yes your right there is, although the help of a magnifying glass maybe required to read it, but perhaps the far more important point to make is do you think mihail_bc will ever buy another kobo ereader? somehow i think not.

best wishes koboy.

Methinks there is a significant difference between "I just read a note on the Amazon forum about one left in a car having screen damage" and two out of thirteen reviews on BestBuy Canada's site complaining about screen damage not covered by warranty. Or three out four bad screens in my case.

I've had an Xperia Z series, so I am aware of the cracked screens issues Sony had (mine never cracked). But Sony did stand by its product, while Kobo refuses to.

As to leaving stuff in the car, I sometimes do leave my readers in either the glove compartment or the armrest console when traveling and never had an issue. It's ludicrous to expect that a commercial product would break if left in the car nowadays.

I am puzzled why anyone would feel that they have to so vehemently defend a company which does appear to have an issue with their product (the Aura HD and possibly H2O) and refuses to stand by it. "Mine still works because I am oh so careful with it" does the OP no good and trying to find fault with the users, when there are so many cases of cracked screens, is unhelpful.

Apparently, some have rather low expectations of quality.

But those who expect more should stay away from Kobo.

I think we all have very high expectations. The thing is that Kobo meets them.

Show me another company that makes a 6.8" reader (or larger, but still affordable), with the H2O's display quality, that is customizable and at the same time not brickable [that's how I lost one of my readers - the display was fine but what good is that if it won't boot and there is no way to recover], supports EPUB, and Japanese, and ... has page flip keys and white housing instead of black

Kobo H2O is not my perfect reader (wishful thinking) but it's the one closest to it. Kobo makes great devices

If I go by your example I have to say there are probably few people affected by cracks but they sure make a lot of noise (understandably - to some extent).

Those Sony there you can see the damage looks more or less identical on the covered ones so it seems to have been an issue with the device. For Kobo - need more data.

There's a huge difference between the glass on a phone and the glass substrate of an ereader. Sony took the same stance as Kobo on broken substrates on their ereaders, they considered the cracked screens user damage and not under warranty.

I down loaded Sony repair manual for my T1 and it has a little about replacing and calibrating screen maybe for warranty repairs. Was replacement batteries available for early Sony and Kobo readers but not for newer than Kobo wifi.
