Apparently any blue-light drastically reduces melatonin production, so I don't think a low level is quite the solution I'm looking for. Already do that anway.

The most recent research I've seen on this saw modest changes (from memory, something like eleven minutes of sleep lost?) after reading on an iPad. In a moderately dim room. For two hours. On full brightness. That is orders of magnitude more blue light than a well-adjusted Paperwhite is going to give you reading on it all day.

Have you personally found that reading on electronic devices affects your sleep? I've been reading on such devices for 30 years and haven't personally noticed any issues.

I think it varies greatly for different people. Personally, I find that looking at the iPad or PC for 20 minutes before bed has a massive effect on my ability to get to sleep. On any 2 comparable nights when I am on the verge of falling asleep before going to bed - on one without looking at a screen I will fall asleep straight away, on another when I spend 20 minutes on the iPad I can take over an hour to get to sleep.
It probably also depends on the spectrum of the light you are in for the hours before going to sleep. Consumer lightbulbs can have very different spectrums, and most TV default settings are very blue in order to get that 'Persil Whites' (which is actually blue) effect. I only have bulbs that have the orange glow of incandescent bulbs (surprisingly difficult to find in LED) and my TV is properly set up so it is not blue. I would be more interested to see the figures from the research that shows the variation between people and how low light levels for shorter periods affect those who are more sensitive to it. A simple headline average could hide a lot of variation and significant effect for some people. |

I read in bed with either my Voyage or my Paperwhite nearly every night till I feel sleepy and then I go right to sleep. It's never been a problem for me.

I find night reading on my Paperwhite unpleasant after more than 5-10 minutes. I cannot find a brightness setting that is comfortable, it seems simultaneously too bright and not bright enough, contrast never seems sufficient, lighting appears irregular (though better than external clipon light of yore). The Voyage should well be better, but I have no way to know. In full dark environment, I prefer LCD screens with white text on black, perhaps with brightness turned down a little bit. It's very consistent, crisp contrast etc. That's still not ideal, but I can tolerate it for longer periods, and have never felt it affected sleep much.
Ideal for either screen type is having ambient light so pupils are naturally contracted, lending better natural focus. |

I am planning to replace my old Ebook reader by Kindle Voyage. Happily, a lot of friends here prefer it.

Yes, I'm thinking about doing that too, but I'm going to wait to see if there will be a new Voyage before year's end, even if the hardware updates turn out to be minimal. All bets are off if they ship a Liquavista device, though.
