I had an original Nook Simple Touch rooted. It was a disappointment. The version of Android was considered to be very obsolete even back then and it had very limited space for installing apps. Plus, it lacks physical Android buttons, so I had to use an on-screen [semi-transparent] gizmo that you had to press to get the four Android buttons.

If you want a generic Android device, I'd honestly suggest buying a generic Android device. It'll give you a much better experience than buying a dedicated reader and trying to turn it into something it was never intended to be.

Yeah, the Nook Simple Touch w/Glowlight would probably have the same issues. I've never bothered rooting mine. I just know it was a popular thing to do for a while.

Harry's advice to just buy a generic android e-ink reader is probably the best advice.

Bear in mind that if you choose to go open, some amount of "work" will be required on your part.

If you use epub on Kobo, you have to do some minor work to get them to display as you wish. If you choose to install Koreader and / or Coolreader, same thing again. But it's not huge.

If you choose to go Android, you may have to alter (rename or delete) internal system apk processes associated with cell and telephony to increase battery life. It's bizarre, but many producers of open Android e-readers do not remove this aspect of the OS out-of-the-box. Search for Nook ST and battery life problems and you will find all the info. It's more work, and may not be necessary for your device.

Also be aware of the version of Android you get. Higher versions of Android supposedly use more power. I use 2.1 and I tend to seek out older version of apk files for apps that I install manually. Googleplay may not be the best way to go. Also older versions may be less hardware intensive. Saying that, I'd get the most recent version of Android possible, and expect to charge a new charge about once a week if I'm only reading on it. If I'm editing spreadsheets, obviously the power draw will be more.

Android is my choice. The work was worth it on a rooted Nook ST.

Have a look at BQ Cervantes - an open source e-ink reader. Comes with complete sources (sans DRM related stuff) and is designed to be modified by hackers.

I had a look around and it looks like it is *very* niche and there are very few third-party programs for it or independent developers hacking it and publishing results - if any.

Many thanks to everybody for all the suggestions and the comments. I haven't replied during August since I was on holyday, now I am back... and I placed my order. I ended up raising my budget a little and ordered a Boyue T62 for 142$ on AliExpress, and I am am very eager to put my hands on it :-)

I got it yesterday. I already like it, the default firmware is not that bad! I will use it for a few days as-is, then I'll start to twiddle it a bit; at first I simply want to install Google play and/or aptoid and check whether that already satisfies my needs, then if I need more I shall root it, I suppose it also depends on battery performance. I shall keep you pu to date :-)

If it is T62D then I would recommend installing ENERGY EREADER PRO + firmware. Its a rebranded T62+ with built in support for google play works very well. And a lot simpler than modifying and installing the play store on the original firmware.

Well, rooting and installing the play store was a breeze; on the other side, I am still trying to improve battery duration. If you can tell me that the Energy ereader firmware works well in this respect, I will certainly install it! Do you have a link?

Fron what I have heard, the Energy sistem firmware is a little bit better in that regard.

for page with firmware. Make sure you have the corresponding hardware. The plus at the end of the model name makes a big difference.

T62D is the latest + version with the carta screen. I have the same device on that I installed energy pro + firmware. For some reason it doesn't update on its own so have to manually download the latest update after you flash the pro + firmware.
A new updated firmware for t62d is out though you can try that if you want.
