I was hoping to stay around $100. I'm looking at the ASUS MeMo Pad 7 ME176CX-A1, for $119. The reviews on this one look pretty good, and my old ASUS netbook has been a workhorse, so I'm favorably inclined toward ASUS.

I'm also tempted by the Toshiba Excite Go AT7-C8. I'd been on the verge of getting this one until I saw some really bad reviews. Now I'm thinking about it again because it's been dropping in price by $2-$3 every day at Amazon for the past week--today it's down to only $55. At that price, maybe I can overlook some drawbacks. On the other hand, these price drops have me baffled--I'm wondering why Amazon's trying to dump these (other retailers have not similarly dropped the price).

Any opinions on either of these, or recommendations for something else? Thanks.
I bought an asus but it will not install some of my favorite ebook readers like moon reader pro.

I am in general not happy with it.

I also have a samsung tab 2 and a samsung tab 4.

I am very happy with both the older and the newer samsung. The Tab 4 seven inch is very light and will allow for multiple login profiles.

In the past I have owned no-name tablets from china etc and would never purchase another. They all lasted under a year (I read a great deal being retired) and could not handle the occasional "drop to the floor".

My older samsung has been in near constant usage for over two years and is still going strong. I only got the Tab 4 because of it's age and I wanted a good backup. Due to the limitations on my asus tablet I don't depend on it at all... just keep it charged.

Saw the comment about the ASUS ME176cx won't install the MoonReader Pro; just installed MoonReader Pro on my me176cx. Haven't used it nor will be using it as I use the me176cx as a universal remote controller.

But then I'm running the OTA lollipop. Haven't any idea to get rid of CleanMaster yet as it "cleans" without my knowledge or permission & wipes out needed files for "optimizing".

Pro or the free version? The free Moonreader app works... the Pro or paid version would not install.

The Pro version. MoonReader+ Pro came up & displayed "what's new"; ver. 3.07 MoonReader Pro; downloaded from Google Play, NOT copied/sent from my other tablets; even installs onto my Fire HDX 8.9.

Would this five inch phone or phablet be suitable as an eReader
My old phone needs replacing and my Nexus 7 (2012) is getting a bit iffy
I'm considering replacing them both with a single phablet type smart-phone
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Depends where you do your reading. Personally I wouldn't like it because LCD screens are difficult to read in sunlight; I far prefer an eInk screen. But if you're comfortable reading on your Nexus 7 I'm sure it would be fine.
