Don't get carried away. We don't yet know the extent of the problem, other than that it does appear to be limited to Google Play Books. Personally I would rather get my ebooks elsewhere than upgrade ADE beyond 2.0.

According to this in order to solve the problem you need to upgrade to ADE 4.03 as Google Play is now using the newer ACS4 DRM. Does anyone know if you need to uninstall ADE 2 or if the two versions will coexist on the same machine? Also, if can co-exist when you download a book which version will open automatically? |

After reading on mobilereads forum I downloaded ADE version 4.03. Now download works I have seen no mention of the need to upgrade to 4.03 either in this thread or any other mobileread thread. However, I note that 4.03 is the current latest version available for download. It appears to me that the lesson the Adobe poster took from Mobileread was that the problem was solved by installing a later version, and as a result installed the latest available. Personally my understanding is that 4.0.3 supports ACS6 and the new Adobe DRM. At some time in the future it is possible that Vendors using ACS6 will turn on an option which will download books with the new DRM to those with versions of ADE which support it, whilst continuing to download books with the old DRM to those with older versions of ADE. Upgrading to 4.0.3 does not therefore seem to be a wonderful idea. |

I agree & I certainly do not want to upgrade to ADE 4! However ADE ACS4 DRM does appear to be what Google Play is using. (See the Copyright section in the link below.)
https://play.google.com/about/books/...tml?hl=en&rd=1 I do not believe ADE 2.0 supports ADE ACS4. If I am wrong I stand corrected. All I know is I have ADE 2.0 & I am getting an error message that is preventing me from downloading new books. I am just trying to find a way to fix this. Per my question, does anyone know if both ADE 2 & ADE 4 can coexist? If so, which version will open automatically when you download a book? |

Edit: ACS4 is Adobe Content Server and uses the old drm. It is compatible with ADE 2. http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/0...ebook-readers/ Last edited by Purple Lady; 06-04-2015 at 11:58 AM. |

Well, if that's the case & ADE 2 is compatible with Google Books seems like it is a Google problem not an ADE problem & upgrading beyond 2.0 will not help. If anyone finds a solution I hope they will post it.

Finally, as we don't know what the problem is, it is not impossible that an upgrade to 4.0.3 will fix it. However, as I said in one of my earlier posts, personally I would rather get my ebooks elsewhere than upgrade ADE beyond 2.0. You may feel differently. |

Good Point. Would certainly like to hear if others also having problems with 2.0. And, yes, I do have ADE 2.0 installed on another system. (That one is running Win 7 & the other 8.1)
I am getting the error with both. ADE 2 still works fine with both 3M & OD books. Was not having any problem with Google until yesterday. Only new purchases seem to be affected. |

Good to know ADE 2.0 can be installed alongside ADE 1.7.2
Am still using the older version & prefer it, I believe 2.0 gave me problems with Library books previously. My recent google play purchase that caused the error in ADE worked with Sony Reader for PC. So that maybe a solution for anyone still having problems or who don't want ADE 2.0 |

Having ADE 2.0 on my laptop and keeping 1.7.2 for everyone other than Google on my PC is a work around I can live with. As others have said if 2.0 stops working, I'll simply stop buying books from them. |

Nope. The Sony Store has been closed for at least a year now, could be more.
Reader for PC updated to access Kobo. Last edited by Polarpenguin; 06-04-2015 at 07:27 PM. |
