That is not a revelation when you use a Nook as your touchstone.

I would be more inclined to listen if you were comparing an iPad to virtually any other e-ink device brand.

Alas, I have significant experience with only the Nook ST e-ink device, so a true revelation will not be forthcoming.

Dang! I was really hoping the Revelation was finally here.

When Apple first sued Android makers for violating their bogus "rectangles with rounded corners" patent, that was the last time I even considered looking at any Apple product. How they got a patent for an idea already in use for years, I have no idea.

I do now own an Amazon Fire -- and though I like the screen fine for reading (using Sepia at night), I'm always amazed how often the battery has to be charged -- so most of my Kindle reading is still done on my e-Ink reader (Kindle Touch) and I don't expect that will change any time soon.

I'm very particular about fonts as well, and Kindles don't have many choices. Fortunately, there is one font (and only one) that works well for me, so it doesn't matter to me that I don't like the rest of the fonts. If I hadn't liked any of the fonts, I would have taken advantage of the easy return policy and sent the Kindle back.
I tolerate the limited font selection, it's the limited sizes that get me. Basically, every time I start a book I get exasperated as I have to choose between reading this size which is ever so slightly too small to read for long stretches or go up the next size which is this big. A little more gradation please...

I agree -- although the Nook seemed to have the "right" size font for me -- at least on the "Nook books" I bought from B&N -- whereas the Kindle didn't. That issue was alleviated on my Kindle Touch by installing the Constantia font -- which has a size that is somehow situated between the standard fonts sizes that come with the Kindle Touch. And one setting is just about perfect for me. It's also a darker font than what came with the Kindle Touch, which was another issue I had with the original fonts.

Actually, you are able to change this in the Kindle Voyage for azw3 format books. The fix is outlined in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=256969

@tdonline and @rcentros -- I agree. It would be much better if Kindle had more font-size choices.

@shalym -- This is great news! I will check it out!

Thanks for the link. Interesting, so some hope if I ever upgrade. A couple quick questions ... sorry about my ignorance. First, it seemed like this did not require rooting, is that correct? (I'm not positive, some said it had to be rooted, others didn't -- at least that's the way it came across in my confused mind.) It looks like the instructions applied to a specific firmware release -- would this work for the newest Paperwhite and the New Basic and the Voyage? Apparently it won't work on any older Kindles, correct?

Thanks for any clarification. I don't really have a way to test it, so just curious.

No rooting required. The vanilla firmware checks for and reads if possible from a plaintext file deposited in the userstore (Kindle drive -- what you get when you connect a Kindle to a computer).

AFAIK any Kindle will work, so long as the firmware is 5.6.1 or above. The KV/KPW2/KT2 all qualify.

shalym!

I'm shocked at how easy this was to get custom font-sizes on a Kindle. No rooting, no flashing firmware, just a simple plaintext file copied into the main directory.

I'll accept thanks for linking to the thread, but the real thanks needs to go to ecostin, who is the one that found the way to do this, and posted it on MR to share with us.

Yes, big kudos to ecostin, but big thank you to you, too, as I never would have found this without you. I rarely visit the Developer's forum as most of it is over my head. Plus, the thread title didn't exactly scream "font-size hack here!" It was like a hidden gem that you uncovered for me

So long as your library supports Nook, then go for it. The new Nook Glo is INCREDIBLY light! As you can see, I have many devices. While my Kindle Keyboard is my go-to device at home, I really love the Nook Glo when away from home.

Yes, all ereaders have their own foibles - they may or may not bother you. I find the paperwhite touch screen over sensitive. I bought one for my Mom when they first came out and she likes hers (she's 81).

Lots of people here like Kobo, but I have no personal experience with them except for buying ebooks. Many people have reported problems with their customer service. My only problem with the was not fixing an ebook (you bought one book and received something else-they took it off sale rather than fix it). Make sure your library can let you check out books on Kobo. My sister can at one library system and not at another, although I don't know why since they are epub.

On the other hand, if lighting is the only reason to buy, consider just getting a bright light and attaching it to your cover.
