I agree completely. There are e-ink devices aka e-readers, and there are LCD tablets. Current big brand versions of the former are all locked down - you get only the library and collection views that the makers want you to get.
I think every poster bar one agrees with all of that.

Ps Kobo class their optimised- for -Kobo-books tablets as - guess what - tablets.
I am defining big brand as one having 10 pc or more market share.Oynx share is way lower.

Ppsgoolesbest selling android tablets - nexus - ship with Google books as stated and also with no file manager whatsoever. So clearly they expect you not to need to poke around in androids often c confusing folder structures.

With the very greatest respect, though, there are also eInk devices which are completely open Android tablets, which can download any app from the Google Play Store. They may not be "mass market" devices, but they are unquestionably out there should one happen to be in the market for such a thing. Devices such as the Boyue T62, and the Onyx T68.

I did not realise that those two named devices are e ink. But if so, surely they cannot run most of what is in play store . How are you going to get candy crush to run in shades of grey slow ink.

I concede that amazon does have an in stock e-ink device that does what you both say. But £249 for e-ink would not tempt me much

I said that you could download any app, not that it would work well . As you very rightly say, apps that have animated content are unlikely to work well. There are many apps, though, that do work well: basically anything that isn't dependent on colour or animation. "Calibre Companion", for example, works beautifully on the T68.

The main reason the M96 is expensive is that it has a 9.7" screen. Large-screen eInk devices are expensive because large eInk screens are expensive.

I think it's possible to organize books via folder using koreader, and that koreader can be installed on a PW1. It will involve jail-breaking the device.

Edit: I see the OP has already been made aware of this. It's what I'd do! But I love to root / jailbreak devices.

It'll also involve the OP converting all his books, because KOReader is an ePub reader; it doesn't read Kindle-format books.

Most Readers do not support directories. They support collections. As for Kobo, Calibre can manage those collections with no need to jailbreak. Kindle's need to be jailbroken to have Calibre manage collections. So if you buy a PW2 you could get a device that cannot be jailbroken and if you buy a Voyage you will get a device that cannot be jailbroken.

Kobo collections just work. The new forthcoming Glo HD (same screen as the Voyage at a fraction of the price $129.99) will allow Calibre to manage collections. The voyage, no way since the 5.6.x firmware and Amazon plugging all the holes that allowed for jailbreaking.

Kobo collections are not as good as folder organization. I used a similar "tag" system on a Sony, and I have no desire to go back.

Is it true that you have to jailbreak Kindles to use Calibre to add collections? I find that hard to believe. That would mean you couldn't use it on the new PW2s and the Voyage.

True. The OP may as well get used to removing DRM via Calibre and Apprentice Alf if he wants flexibility from his device.

& how many of those have you met ?

anyway - yes it looks excellent until you read the more damning reviews,

guy puts it into landscape mode, no way back - no factory reset option , no refund....

and resolution is suprisingly low for a large screen device.
