I have a Sony reader and live in Brooklyn, NY. I use the subway daily and I've only ever seen 1 other person with the same reader. Since the Kindles release, I've seen 2 people reading on them on the subway.
I believe that's a significant difference.
I believe that there's also more interest in digital reading since the release of the kindle. The price is the biggest issue.

Oh, the EVDO works just dandy where I am.

If you like, I would be willing to go out to see your mom and we could test mine out at her house.

I have to go into Austin several times a year to get supplies for my animals.

Also .... I found a site where you can put in the zip code and get the coverage information up close.

It shows Cedar Creek as being in the middle of a high speed EVDO area.

http://www.showmycoverage.com/mycoverage.jsp?id=A921ZON

Just punch in her zip code ....

Your map is much better than the one I was using. It shows she's... in a zone of all white surrounded by orange. It's like she's an island unto herself.

Eh .... same map, it's just that your mother appears to live far enough South of Cedar Creek to be out of the EVDO area. It looks like she's most of the way to Red Rock.

Now, that's a bummer.

No, she's definitely in Cedar Creek per the post office. She's only 20-30 mins from the airport.

I've been surprised at how many Kindles I have seen. At a mystery conference a couple of weekends ago, at least three people showed me theirs. These were not authors writing for eBook publishers, just writers (mostly unpublished or self-published) who also read a lot. My own budget hasn't hairballed up the money for a Kindle yet, but I'm definitely looking.

In terms of seeing Kindle readers while I'm on the light rail (Dallas's mass transit), I haven't seen it yet. Then again, I always celebrate when I see anyone reading at all. I don't think the issue is whether people will stick with paper. The issue is whether paper is replaced by eBooks--or by no books.

What's the ratio of readers between male and female? I see a number of folks reading on the subway, and my impression is about 3 to 2 women to men. A few kids have been reading, but the younger folks of both sexes seem to be preoccupied with games on their cell phones. I've seen a Sony Reader, but no Kindles so far.

I live in Westchester County, NY and while I haven't seen another E-Reader, Kindle or otherwise, the Kindle has made the local news here recently... and not in a good way (politics are involved, so there ya go!)

My Kindle is always with me. At home, on the road, at work, play... well, you get the idea. Prior to my Kindle, I always had a book with me, so it's not that different. I've had several people ask me about it, both male and female and I've put it through it's paces for anyone that asks. Last week a woman at the doctor's office got up, hurried over and said (loudly) ohh, is that one of those Amazon things??? (she was Quite excited!) She had dozens of questions and wanted to touch and try it out... I had a hard time getting it back

Once she had settled back into her seat and I had gone back to reading I realized that I was the corner of the eye view in the room... quite cool!

I have a 505, my wife has a 500, and my mother-in-law has a 500.

There have been times when I've been reading that I do get asked about my 505. ostly from guys. But that's OK. I don't mind talking about my 505. One thing I do wonder about is how many people notice my 505for what it is, but don't say anything. We are due to fly mid-December to Scotland. I'll see then how many people on the plane ask about my 505.

When I flew London-Amsterdam-Vienna-London in August 2007 no one asked me about my PRS-500.
When I flew to Cuba in December, no one asked me about my PRS-500.

The only person who did ask me was a cleaner in college canteen where I read every day for about 30-40 minutes during lunch break.

I live in the Philadelphia suburbs and commute daily to work on the train, and very often read my Cybook. I've seen one woman with a Kindle at the station, but when I tried to strike up a conversation about it, she gave off a real I'm-reading-leave-me-alone-you-weird-geeky-person vibe. I have seen her several times since then, but I leave her alone now. Hello people--if you have an ebook reader, evangelize! I've also seen a woman reading a Sony Reader several times.

One of my co-workers (who commuted via train as well) purchased a Kindle. She has since left for a different job, which involves a train commute from south Jersey to NYC. Another co-worker purchased a Kindle, on my recommendation, for her husband, who travels frequently and uses it for the Wall Street Journal and other subscriptions, which is why I recommended the Kindle for him.

I don't fly that often, but went on a trip from Philly to Chicago last month. On the way out I had the row to myself, but someone asked me about the Cybook at the airport. On the way back, the woman in the seat next to me asked about it, and I gave her a demo.

So if this guy isn't seeing people with ebook readers, Kindle or otherwise, on public transportation, he can't be looking that closely.

I am often approached in restaurants and on the train and asked about my Cybook (usually I get, "Is that a Kindle?"). I always answer questions and give a demo. And I always tell them to check out mobileread.com.

Well, you know how it is ... in any given population there are going to be some real jerks. I love talking to people about ebooks ... or just about books ... in fact, assuming they have anything intelligent to say, I just plain love talking to people ... period.

So .... I agree, if that boob isn't seeing Kindles, or ebooks generally, it's just because it suits his purposes not to see them. For all we know, he's telling a flat out lie to make his point. If even a tenth of the people I've been showing mine to actually go out an buy one ... we're going to have a whole BUNCH of ebook readers in this part of nowhere.
