You have to add to Kobo eReader.conf, in the section of Application Preferences
Code:
HomePageShown=False
And no, it's not usually at your file, you have to add it. The problem was to remove it, I have to put off and on the reader for having again the home screen.

I see. So, in other words, if I use this hack, then I don't have access to the bookstore, etc. I guess I'll just leave it "as is." Or go ahead and do the Geoff patch. Thanks.

It is.

In the case of the Kobo, hacking does not require a jailbreak to gain root access.

If this change is made to the config file then it only works because the code was designed to interpret this particular entry in the file. Hacking changes code, not predefined options that were designed in by the author of the code.

With a Kindle, you have to jailbreak to get any sort of access to the system. What the Kobo patches do is patch the firmware files outside of the Reader and then has the Reader install them over what is already there. No jailbreaking required. In fact, I was able to replace the default hyphenation dictionary (for US English) with a better one.

Yes, patching can be considered hacking, but there is no jailbreaking required.

I understand. Linux depends on text configuration files and you -- often -- need root access to modify those files. However, I was able to apply configuration modifications (patches?) to both my Kindle 4 (margin changes) and my Kindle Touch (adding fonts and modifying the Touch to see them) without root access (jailbreaking).

(I should mention that I was only able to do this because folks were kind enough to post "howto" posts in the Kindle developer's section. And I should say "thank you" to them again. These two relatively small changes make my two Kindle devices much more satisfying to use.)

That is because the necessary files were being exported to the computer via the userstore.

The jailbreak allows us to run scripts on the Kindle that affect the system partition which is otherwise inaccessible.

The Kobo doesn't have a digital lock on the update mechanism, that is all, I believe.
The update mechanism is used on both devices to get the system itself to apply patches to binaries, add services, etc.
