Well, another reason to update to 3.12.0 is that one of the default (comes with the firmware) fonts has been fixed and that may be the same font that caused "font-family: sans-serif" to now work properly.

I'm going to update, but I've been too lazy to put in my changes to some of the 3.11.0 patches.

The book: Paul Fussell's The Great War and modern Memory. I bought it from Kobo as an epub2, so I didn't need to convert it when I put it into Calibre.

I've gotten about 90 pages in and whammo I can no longer read the book.

Okay, so I've opened it on my Playbook, Kobo app (kepub version), and all works as it should. (Well I haven't used highlighting and I won't in this format)

So it's narrowed to either the epub or the highlighting or this latest version.

Did the book have a large number of anchor tags in the body text by any chance?

I have run into a similar situation with books on my kobo before (epub, using RMSDK) where the book displays fine up to a certain point, then without warning closes and marks the book finished. This will always happen at the same point in that book if you try to read it again.

The first couple of times it happened, I reconverted the book using Calibre. The last instance I had, I looked at the book source, and noticed that every paragraph included something like:
Code:
<a id="1234"></a>
So I removed those tags, and the book then behaved itself perfectly on the kobo.

So I think there may be some issue with RMSDK choking on a large number of links/anchor tags, although I can't be certain.

EDIT: The same books would read perfectly fine of the PC version of ADE.

Thanks David for all your efforts.

Removing all the annotations worked and I can now successfully read the Calibre side loaded epub on my Glo again.

Just removing the highlighting on the Glo didn't work, I had to 'remove all', that is the dog ear bookmarks and the highlighting.

So - that definitely narrows it to an Annotation problem, eh!

(PS did you happen to read in pages around the 90's about the postal system for the front lines:
Spoiler:
'one officer who in 1916 “kept a sort of open mess for which he paid, but which was more like a society lunch than a serious effort to establish war hardness and endurance. Chickens, hams, jellies, wines and various rich and unwholesome foods were posted to this soldier daily by a devoted wife, or consigned from fashionable stores.

And:'of gramophones and boxing gloves sent by mail, of fly-sprayers and “metal waistcoats,” of Zeiss field-glasses and wading boots and the popular Harrison’s Anti-Lice Pomade. Definitely not all fonts. I just tried with Arno Pro and Adobe Garamond Pro. Neither of these work with the advanced font controls.

Then the device suddenly started displaying the sleep image with the top quarter inch or so all white. This happened to me before but I'm not sure of the cause. Corrupted database? (why do these seem so fragile?)

So I just did a factory reset with the device updating automatically over wifi to 3.11.0.

Yes, there are a lot of anchors and references for the footnotes. Plus there is a lot of code for quotes and poems (or song?) and pictures. It seems to be the annotations, but it might be a combination of the annotations and the code. It could be to do with exactly where the annotation started or finished. Unfortunately, we would have to see the annotations and apply them to the file to work it out.

Oh, I've deleted the annotations now, which consisted of 17 dog ears and two highlights.

Do you still have them on the Glo copy that I gave you?

Annotations don't get added to the book. They are stored in the device database and, for epubs in the main memory, an annotations file. The information stored is the start and end location of the highlight, the actual selected text and the note. When the page is rendered, the device uses this to place the highlights or the dog-ear.

What's the best way to delete an ePub that has annotations and/or bookmarks? Would it be via the H2O or via Calibre? I'm trying to find out which method (or if both) will delete the annotations file as well as all the information in the database.

Just upgraded (via KoboUtilities in Calibre) and had exactly the same issue. However I had also reconverted the offending epub and re-uploaded and so I assumed the annotations I had made no longer sync'd with the new epub version. Removed all annotations and all was good.

What's the best way to delete an ePub that has annotations and/or bookmarks? Would it be via the H2O or via Calibre? I'm trying to find out which method (or if both) will delete the annotations file as well as all the information in the database.
Both methods do the same thing. The device removes all trace of the book from the database, but doesn't remove the annotations file. The calibre driver does the same thing. I have deliberately kept the delete in the driver the same as the firmware.

There does need to be some clean-up. I'll add to my todo list for the utilities plugin an function to clean-up the annotations directory. I already have an function to clean-up any orphaned cover images, so it won't be hard to do. When is another matter.

How easy is it to find the annotations file that goes with a given eBook? Is it named the same? I'd like to delete the annotations file when I plug in the H2O so I don't end up with a lot of obsolete files.

Shall I put a note in the plugins thread for the annotation file to be deleted?
