If so, will it continue to work once the wifi connection is lost? Once downloaded, if map data retained? |

Thanks for your input...I just ordered the phone. It looks like a steal, especially since it will extend my Prime for another year free. Wonder if I can get this phone to work with Straight Talk. I have been using ST for the last year using verizon towers, I know this will not work on Verizon, but it would be nice to try if it works on ST.

Just download the maps you want and it should function like a handheld or car GPS. Those devices work just fine without wifi or cell towers.

![]() So far, it's landed me 2 64GB iPhone 6s, 2 Fire TV Sticks, a 16GB Fire HD 6, a Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, an Amazon Echo, a 32GB Fire Phone, an LG Volt, and a bunch of smaller stuff. The trick to using plastic is to pay it off in full every month. |

I've been using handheld GPS for over 20 years. And I certainly expect a mapping app to function without a network, but software can and is written to do and not do all kinds of things on purpose and accidentally. It would not be the first app to require a network connect without (from a user POV) good reason.

Amazon only unlocked the 32GB versions. Considering the $100 price difference between the 32GB and 64GB phones, I'd still opt for 32GB even if 64GB was offered.

received the phone and I have been playing with it all afternoon! For me this phone could NEVER replace my iPhone (the app store does not have the quality of the right apps that I need) but I knew that going in.
that being said I find it to be a nice well put together phone. I can't talk about the phone part as my ST SIM has not arrived yet! just do not put it next to a iPhone 6+ or you will cry...The screen is vastly better on my iphone. |

It's what zebradude said. Most people buy the lowest priced phone or tablet; which means companies will produce more models of that size.

Got ours today. This will be for my wife. Now I have to decide if I want one for myself. Certainly got a better camera than my current phone, more storage, better overall specs, but there's the matter of apps, though that's not too much of a problem (apart from google apps, Play Books etc which is as expected). (hey, when did the youtube.com app show up in the Appstore? I'm sure it wasn't there a few months ago...wonder if it has Chromecast support as with Android/iOS)
Maps/navigation seems okay but there's no traffic overlay AFAICT. I think as long as you do route plan before leaving wifi, it will cache the route information so you don't need cell connection, but I have not tried that. Haven't decided on a provider yet. It will most likely be one on AT&T network (Go Phone, Cricket, StraightTalk) as we don't have much in the way of T-Mobile or Metro PCS coverage. I think there is supposed to be an update to Fire OS at some point (currently at 3.6.8). |
