Just occurred to me, I was doing much the same thing 25 years ago when I was building hot desk call centres and trading rooms - nothing much changes.

Hey, I agree as far as that goes.

Thanks. If I keep Calibre on my laptop mainly I may not even need a VNC. But thanks for your help

Actually, it is even more secure to do a one-way mirror sync from your calibre libraries to their Dropbox backup, which renders that redundant, but...

Anyway, my workflow:
  1. pause dropbox.
  2. start calibre. Library is stored outside Dropbox.
  3. stop calibre.
  4. rsync script copies changes from calibre libraries to the Calibre Libraries folder in Dropbox
  5. start dropbox, sync all changes using the redundant clone
Another method is to use symbolic link. Database folder is outside dropbox, a symbolic folder is in Dropbox.

You can keep dropbox running to sync other folders. The Symbolic folder only gets synced when you pause and resume Dropbox.

Do not rely on known bugs to continue being bugs in order to achieve your purpose.

And even then that will only work on Windows. Not linux or OSX.
