Does cold weather affect your choice of reading device?

Although it's not quite yet freezing here in Germany, this question has crossed my mind. At the moment I often use my Kindle PW2 to read when I'm waiting for the bus, but as soon as I need to wear gloves I'll switch to my Pocketbook Touch Lux which has buttons.

It doesn't get cold enough where I live to affect which device I use, but I do read more books when the weather's inclement.

I live in a pretty quiet, low-traffic area which after about 20 minutes of walking starts to hook up to the busier city centre.

So for about the first 15-20 mins and if the weather's nice, I often do read, provided I'm basically one of the only people on the sidewalk and there's like, no cars obviously driving way too fast and recklessly. Once I start to have more pedestrian company and there's more than a handful of motor vehicles occasionally going by, the e-reader gets put away and I start paying more attention to my surroundings.

It also rains a lot around here, so that does affect my choice of reading device, and my old buttons-only K2 is far easier to manage in a plastic baggie while I'm waiting for the bus than my Sony, which requires more touchiness, navigation-wise.

Riding the bus means I do change devices and often read paper. It's the penalty for living in a place that even though Winter is twenty days away, it has been -25C overnight a few times already.

Today I was reading on my phone. My Kindle remains indoors at home for most of the winter.

I can read and walk at the same time but I was really thinking about carrying something to read until I get somewhere warm.

What I find amazing and appalling is seeing people read (or nowadays, text) while driving. Not while stopped but in moving vehicles.

Hmm, that IS appalling. It is one thing to read while you are walking on a sidewalk, where the worst that can happen is the incredibly awkward and rude bumping-into-people, it is another thing to do so when the worstthat can happen is careening into a building, flattening several pedestrians along the way, and killing numerous people (including yourself) while at the same time causing property damage for good measure (because you haven't done enough damage yet).

Depends on the paper shredder. Some will allow CDs/DVDs to be shredded.

I see this often. One time on the expressway I saw a woman with a large book, paper or magazine (couldn't quite make it out) on her steering wheel that she was reading.

British police are very, very strict on this kind of thing, and if caught you'll face a stiff fine and points on your licence. Anything that distracts you from controlling the vehicle - even, for example, drinking from a bottle of water - is prohibited.

I guess I see reads-while-walking as being a sidewalk kind of thing, whereas while driving is inherently part of -while-doing-dangerous-things.

Done properly, reads-while-walking is totally safe, whereas Driving Under the Book (DUB ~= DUI) fundamentally has no safety mechanisms.

People can take anything to extremes. Personally, I feel safe walking on the sidewalk, I would no more cross a crosswalk while reading than I would step off the side into the road.

Aside from the irony factor, that is nothing more than someone getting run over by someone reading while driving.
