Generally speaking, the best place to purchase (IMHO) is the webscriptions.com web site. If its a book they carry buy it there before you buy it on Amazon. Webscriptions contains sf/fantasy books mostly from Baen -- also a few smaller publishers.

The webscriptions advantages:
- No DRM - you can read it on your Kindle, PC, smartphone, ... and a few years from now when you replace your Kindle it'll still work.

- Usually cheaper (A few titles, such as Weber's Tor books may cost a bit more, but 99% of the books are definitely cheaper)

- Earlier access: Most books are available two weeks to three months before they are broadly released.

Besides, the folks at Baen are good folks generally and specifically from an ebook perspective and I like to reward their positive behavior.

They also have a fairly large selection of free books. Their monthly bundles can be a good deal, also, if you're interested in 2 or 3 of the 5 (or is it 6?) books in the bundle.

Occasionally they will also have author/series bundles as well.

I got back a reply from Amazon on a few things:

1) Pebble in the Sky was pulled for "quality reasons" and will be back soon. Much the same story with Dune, and since that one is back I guess there is hope. Anyone re-download the new "quality" DUne to see what happened?

2) They are going to correct the Chronicles of Narnia series... seemed embarrased about it.

Dune still appears unavailable, unless I'm looking in the wrong place?

Do they allow re-down loads if they've sold you a piker? I haven't actually looked at Dune to be able to complain, but it's on my list as "soon."

Oh you are right:
http://www.amazon.com/Dune-40th-Anni...8708466&sr=1-3

however "pebble in the sky" didn't even retain its page with an "available soon" link, so I just noticed that Dune's page was back and made the assumption.

Sad progress over the last two months. Only two new books:

Asimov's "The Robots of Dawn"
Niven/Pournelle's "Inferno"

Dune is still "coming soon" and Pebble in the Sky is still MIA

Don't know why the slowdown in adding books to the store. Wonder if the spat over the audio playback caused some jockying between the publishers and amazon.

Well, according to my chart of total books, there's been no slowdown. But why the slowdown in award winners in particular, I don't know. There are quite a lot of books available in MOBI format in stores like Fictionwise that aren't available on Kindle yet; I really don't understand how this occurs. Surely whatever publisher made a deal with Fictionwise would want to make a deal with Amazon.

I went back and reran my excel macro over the entire database. The following ebooks once present in the store have been removed:

Canticle for Leibowitz (I actually own this on my kindle)
Startide Rising
The Pride Of Chanur
Downbelow Station
The Faded Sun: Kesrith
A Plague of Demons
A Pebble in the Sky

Several books are C.J. Cherryh, though "Cuckoo's Egg" is still available.

From now on Im going to do a full scrub since now my macro works

Canticle.

Cantonile was a 70s singing duo. (Not really but if you think about it someone will get the joke.)

Very interesting. C.J. Cherryh is releasing her own ebook versions through http://closed-circle.net/ along with Lynn Abbey and Jane Fancher. It seems likely that this has something to do with her books dropping off your list.

From a response by CJ in I need some secret agents…
Quote:
There’s a story behind the dwindling number of e-books of mine out there. Some years ago there was a company called Peanut Press that contracted with DAW to do some e-books. I received a few hundred dollars for this, and then Peanut sold itself to an entity that then sold pieces of itself (as I understand) multiple times, or divided itself multiple times, each piece thinking it had all these rights.

Now, it seemed to me that I should be paid for the books they were selling. DAW thought it should be paid, too. So the Penguin legal guys that represent DAW as well as Penguin got on the case and sent out some cease and desist letters, which appear to have hit the target. Books are vanishing from Kindle and Fictionwise
There is more interesting stuff in this post about FictionWise and about the Google book settlement.
