Mmm, Task View is pretty nice. So are the tiles on the Start menu (better than the Notification Center in OS X Yosemite). Everything's still half and half though. Some things are optimized for the tablet, others are not. But it's a technical preview, and we have six months of changes coming up.

The good points (imo):
-Fan -- fanless -Battery -- S11 (8.25 hrs) / S13 (7.75 hrs) (if it is on real usage...) -price OO. The bads: -OS -- Windows 8.1 (not touch screen? I think W8.1 is designed for touch screens). -GPU -- Intel HD Graphics (not for gamers at all...) Last edited by BookAdmin; 10-03-2014 at 01:17 PM. |

Intel HD Graphics are not bad for mobile games. What were you expecting out of a $200 laptop?

Experience your digital world with the crystal-clear HD display. Also available with Touchscreen". Looks like the touchscreen will come as an optional add-on, which I like. |

These laptops are aimed at kids, casual users, and those wishing to have extras scattered about the house. I for one would never consider these Winbooks or Chromebooks to be primary devices. Too many shortcomings.

The only concern I have with it on a Chromebook-like system is that it's not the most resource-friendly, but I have also not run it on anything low-powered, so I have no actual experience to base this concern on. |

With Windows 10, Microsoft solved this "problem." I must say that the metro menu was a bit confusing for beginners. The latest version of windows will please everyone, those who want metro and those who do not want it. Last edited by BookAdmin; 10-04-2014 at 10:05 AM. |

The problem with low end Windows machines is that the software is usually written for more powerfull machines. Not so on Android and IOS.

So far other than trying to run Bluestacks android emulator on my Win 8 tablet I haven't found anything that choked it. And that could likely be lack of RAM as much as anything. Last edited by robko; 10-04-2014 at 07:01 PM. |

The rendering is the big issue, not so much the editing of stuff.

Audio stuff (rendering, soft synths, etc) also requires a modern CPU, more so than gaming. But I concur, a large number of people use their computers for web browsing, email, light text processing, social media, casual games (often in the browser), and media consumption. None of these require a powerful machine. I could easily do a pretty large chunk of my work on an Android tablet, and all of it if all required programs were available for it.
I like the trend. I grew up (professionally too) with 8-bit and 16-bit home computers, which were relatively compact. Then came the era of towers and all their bulkiness and noise, followed by much more convenient laptops (I got my first one in 1993 already, but it was provided by a company I worked for; I could never have afforded one at the time). Now tablets are soaring and cutting into desktop/laptop sales. It's all good. ![]() (Sometimes I'm still amazed at the tech available today. This is the kind of stuff straight out scifi movies of the 80s and early 90s!). |

TBH that's what pushed me to a Win tablet. I had a Blackberry Playbook which I really liked (especially the screen), but having to play with my Excel spreadsheets to dumb them down to work on an Android app got old fast. Now I can go back and forth from tablet to laptop (if I want a bigger screen/keyboard) simply by transferring the file.

Nothing here that would cause me to be any less satisfied with my Linux netbook.
The only two "problems" with my netbook are that it won't run Itunes (friends and family occasionally give me gift cards) and it won't run an audio "clean up" program I use (it's Windows only, but it also pretty much demands a fair amount of hard disk space). Otherwise, I'd dump Windows all together. |
