Fifteen ereaders since 2009, have used pot holders for sleeves for all of them with zero broken ereaders.

I wish Bed, Bath and Beyond still sold the pot holders they had in the spring of 2009. They were the perfect size and shape, well-padded, and had rubber backs. Too bad they sold out of them right after I bought mine; I've never found any that nice again.

Thanks, JohnF and SoulfulDog, for the suggestions.

I am waiting for my Voyage to get here and see how I feel about using it without a cover. I would be afraid of an elastic band. I wouldn't want it to break. I do like the potholder idea, which I remember from older discussions. I just like something soft to rest my hands on while I am holding it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what actually is a "potholder"?

I don't know for sure but I've always assumed it's what we'd call an 'oven glove' (a single one not one of those joined-up two-hands affairs that my mother used to use).

Yes, jackie_W is correct, assuming an "oven glove" is what you use to take hot pans out of the oven etc.

There are some that are shaped like mittens with a thumb, which would not be useful. However there are others that are rectangular. Those are the ones that NNolan is referring to. They are either terry cloth or quilted. Nice and soft for your kindle!

I find it makes the PW feel not quite so thin but it makes very little difference to the overall size (its only a few millimetres thick). It adds 70g in weight, so it's fairly robust, the back is very lightly textured and it just gives it a grippier & softer feel, without it adding too much weight.

The one thing it doesn't do is add anything in terms of attractiveness, not the prettiest to look at, but for me it makes up for that in how it feels.

Edit: I used a cheaper non-branded silicone skin on my old Kindle 3, and it wasn't that great, I think it's the textured bit that makes this skin that bit better (it is a bit more expensive though).

Thank you.

There was something similar to that one that I was looking at, but I can't remember anything about this other one, except that it was maybe in the $7 - $10 range.

You said "good case". My point is that that simply isn't true IMO, unless you classify the official Amazon case not as "good case".

More comfortable to hold, possibly, although that is subjective, but more safer to hold - I do not see a real logical argument for that. A naked kindle is already quite grippy and it is lighter, meaning it is harder to accidently loose the grip.

As said already, when you are reading with it the most vulnerable part is already unprotected. I do not feel a case has a high protection bonus there, especially when combined with the (IMO) higher chance to drop it if it is in a case.

Copy-Paste what I said the very post above the one you quoted:

I rather have more work with getting it in and putting it out of "transport mode" and less bulk when reading.

Dito:

For the "but what if someone bumps into you" scenario I do not see an advantage for the cover because a) if it slips out of your hand chances are high it will land on its unprotected screen in either case (since cover is open) and b) without cover there is a lower chance of it slipping out of your fingers since the naked version is lighter and has (IMO) more grip.

Also - been using mine in public transport for around one year, never had an issue with loosing my grip on the naked version when someone bumped into me. Nowadays I am using the bike, so no reading on the commute for me.

If you do have to stand on public transport and tend to be bumped a lot, you can get a case with a loop for a wrist strap.

The problem here is - there are millions of people who use a Reader. Even if only 1% of those who use their Kindle without a reading cover broke their Reader due to a lack of it they are still a "good number of people".

But it doesn't really make the use of a cover a "must have".

So "I have read a lot of people broke their unprotected readers" isn't really a good indicator for the need of a protection.

If one feels more comfortable with using a cover by all means, go for it, but as seanwhat said, calling people foolish for not using one is ridiculous.

I think we would all agree that using a cover reduces the chance of breaking your reader. Whether making the decision not to do this is "foolish" or not is very much a matter of personal opinion; I don't think one can reasonably describe it as "ridiculous" to hold the view that it is foolish. The fact that you may not share that opinion does not mean that it's not a valid opinion for the person to hold.

I don't necessarily think it's foolish to not use a cover. I do think it's foolish to not use a cover, then whinge and post bad reviews because your device "magically broke itself".
