I am not a fan of movie tie in versions, but will still chose them if they are cheaper that way. Most of the time I don't see the cover anyway, don't have to look at it every time I turn my book on. And sometimes the thumbnail view of the cover is different from the large version. Greatly annoys me, and reminds me again and again why I don't have cover view enabled on my reader. I still try sometimes, and quickly go back to text only view soon as I came across a mismatched thumbnail / full size cover.

Agreed it's like the author is telling you that his book only shines through commercial exploitation and a movie along with it, and the "artistic" part is just secondary.

![]() For me movie tie-in covers usually don't work unless I've actually seen the movie before reading the book (which happens rarely). Otherwise seeing the actors chosen just messes with my own interpretation or mental image of what the characters look like. |

For me personally the simple label of "this book now has a movie" is already more interesting to check out than a book that doesn't. If ontop of that the movie looks promising, it is an easy decision to get the book without researching the book in more detail. We made it our rule to read the book first before watching the movie - especially if we already bought the book. Sometimes the movie loses out and doesn't get bought, even when it initially was planned to watch in movie theater or planned to buy at dvd release. Like you said, but other way around - if the book was good, I already got my money's worth. Last edited by DuckieTigger; 09-02-2014 at 12:38 PM. |

LOL! Well, that could be true for some. However, I actually really appreciate nice cover art. There is also the nostalgia factor. For books I read as a child, I like to see the cover I had as a child. This is especially true if the dramatization was awful (like the straight-up, to me, sacrilegious miniseries of Wizard of Earthsea/Tombs of Atuan) but I still wouldn't want a movie-picture cover of The Hobbit or Lord of The Rings, though I enjoyed those movies. I know what the actors look like. I want the bonus of art.

You can't believe the small details *I* can be bothered about. I've been known to remove a cover from a bought e-book, replacing it with either a version I like better, or my own (which I often do for classics, creating them myself).
I correct indents if they are too large, remove white space between paragraphs, edit the metadata to be as correct as possible.... and so on. Fortunately my OCD does not go so far that I must have the correct ISBN; the ISBN of any (English) version of the book is sufficient. |

Therefore, the cover, and even the front matter and back matter (title page, more of this author, about this author.... etc) are important to me. If I'd just wanted to read the content, I could have downloaded a pirated and OCR'd copy in 2007, when I got and quickly sold my first e-reader, before restarting again (for good) in 2011. |

I don't blame Katsunami for downloading books, but I don't want to openly approve because, hello, the moderators might suddenly swoop down.
