I also think that if Amazon does switch to EPUB, they'll find a way to cut Adobe out of the loop. Either they'll drop DRM completely (as they did with MP3s some years ago) or they'll make their own version...and the way the wind is blowing, I'd predict the former. Even if they do allow Adobe DRM, they'll shift the cost to the publisher/author as a premium feature. Of course, I could be wrong. I've got a stack of SyQuest cartridges that sit on my shelf and mock me in the dead of night... ![]() |

They have very little to gain from selling ebooks to other vendors' readers and even less from opening Kindle to other epub versions. |

Like I said, I could be wrong...but I've gone from buying loads of physical books from Amazon to buying almost zero ebooks from them, and those are just the ones that are Kindle exclusives. If Amazon were willing to sell me EPUBs, especially without DRM, they'd have a good chance at regaining that lost business. I still use their wish lists to track book releases, but I make all my purchases elsewhere. |

Problem is in the mind of the average consumer it's not Mobi vs ePub. It's Kindle format vs Nook format vs Apple format vs Kobo format, etc. The underlying format for many of those may be ePub, but DRM and stuff make them essentially single vendor formats formats for the majority of book buyers.

The corporate publishers only produce epubs. That is why they created the format. Amazon has always supported epub as feedstock to their Kindle production system. They also support other formats for KDP: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A2GF0UFHIYG9VQ |

Honestly can't remember the last time I bought a print book. I've picked up several ebooks in the past few days.
I don't know what Hatchet's plan is here: a: they are control freaks and don't want Amazon calling the shots. b: they think people are crazy enough to pay higher prices for ebooks. c: they think if ebook prices are high enough people will join them in luddite land and buy more hardcover books. I'm guessing "c". Either way they are not likely to get my dollars. |

Most KF8 eBooks started life as ePub and were converted to Mobi/KF8 via Kindlegen.

Going from epub to mobi is trivial. They wouldn't even need to develop or buy their own program, just download Calibre and a single click and it's done.

To be honest, Kindlegen does a better job of conversion than Calibre. Less possible errors and stuff like line space issues etc when using kindlegen.
