I selected Oyster for the same reason. It just looks more polished. I love my iPad Mini. It works great for reading and is lovely with Oyster! I have bought significantly fewer books since joining Oyster and my reading list is way too long. When I read on my full-size iPad I prefer landscape with 2-column mode. Mini is the way to go.

I love Scribd. I have it on my galaxy s5 phone, my Kindle Fire, my Galaxy Tablets, and my iPads. I've had it for about a year and a half, I've renewed once and will definitely renew again.

Oyster is now offering a free 6-month subscription for new subscribers:

Offer now requires an unknown promo code.

Wonder if that means they are having difficulty competing with Kindle Unlimited.

I installed the app so I could check it out, but you can't open outside epubs with it. Can someone who uses Oyster tell me what kind of font and display settings they have? I want to be able to change justification, fonts, margins, line spacing and background color. I can't believe how many apps don't let you change these things.

I hope they stick around. They each offer something different; I have both. With Kindle Unlimited, my preference are books with an audio companion. I've been really pleased. Finding gems.

There is now. There wasn't earlier.

So never mind - the offer is no longer valid.

Darn. A 6 month trial would have been awesome.

The customization on Oyster and Scribd is rather limited. Oyster has 5 font options: 4 serif and 1 sans serif. Background colors are white, grey, sepia and textured. You can't mix and match the font with background color, i.e. it's fixed to the font option. Also a night mode. No options to change margins or line spacing. This link to their webpage shows images and lists the 5 options.

Me too! Kindle Unlimited doesn't have enough book options for me. I love my Oyster subscription. It would take me years to complete my reading list. I have significantly reduced my book purchases. Oyster and the iPad Mini make a great combo!

That one sans serif font is a disappointment. It is so light, it's of no use to me. None of the choices are ideal for me. I feel like i'm always settling.

I sent them an email asking to include margin adjustments. I should have mentioned that sans serif font.

I don't find either the Scribd or Oyster fonts to be ideal. Some are too light; some are too dark. I like serif fonts.

Strange - I've never heard of font being tied to background color before. Line spacing looks larger than I like but usable. I don't understand how people use apps that look like they have double or triple line spacing. That's much too annoying for me especially since I use a large font size and get fewer lines per page to start with.

I remember seeing that FBReader can now use a drm that's different than the standard ones so I keep hoping for a service using FBReader. They would probably take all customization away if they used it anyway. Kind of how the Boox T68 did with AlReader. I liked AlReader normally, but not on the T68 - they took away one of the best settings which was to change the font weight.

Scribd has at least a few university presses available (Princeton and U Chicago). That's pretty cool and unexpected.
