I'm posting this book under the "Christian Interest" thread instead of the "Non-Fiction" thread because of the author's reference and reliance on the Bible.

The original ebooks from Lockman are pretty bad. Neither include the translators' notes and the formatting is pretty poor. There's a newer edition at Amazon that includes the notes, but I haven't looked at it, since it's not available in epub. Thomas Nelson's study Bible editions are fine, though.

Thanks for the feedback! The 1995 edition sounds more like my speed. I tried the sample at Amazon and the formatting on the Lockman edition is indeed quite lacking. Thomas Nelson's editions seem to come only in two options: The MacArthur Study Bible (I already own this in NKJV) and the Charles F. Stanley Life Principles Bible (not keen on Charles Stanley's theology so I'll skip this one). As you noted, I can't seem to find the NASB in epub; I may have to overlook my aversion to the formatting and just pick one up from Amazon.

Now I'm wondering why. I personally like the NASB and use it almost exclusively for reading, studying, et al. I think that it is a popular version; I think that I heard several years ago that Billy Graham recommended it. Maybe it has to do with the Lockman Foundation and licensing issues. I hope that this is not a bad "omen" concerning the future of the NASB.

I guess the reason that I hadn't noticed before now is that I often use Bible programs to do my reading and the NASB is commonly available among them. Of course, I keep a legacy paper & leather copy for various reasons.

You implied that it is available at Amazon. If it is not DRM protected (I don't know much about this, so I'm "winging it"), I think that you can use a free program called Calibre to convert it to ePub (and other formats, for that matter). But, I have a feeling (a sixth sense?) that all of the newer, in copyright versions are going to be DRM protected.

It is available at Amazon and I could convert it through Calibre but Bibles are notoriously troublesome to convert; they're huge and they have all these linked notes. I'd rather spare myself the aggravation. While I decide what I want to do, I'll probably try accessing it through BibleGateway or someplace like that.

The NASB with notes is in the AZW3 format, which includes an embedded epub. If you're handy with Calibre, you can use Calibre to remove the DRM and then use the KindleUnpack plugin to extract the (more-or-less) original epub without actually having to do a conversion. If you might want to go that route, you can try it out on the sample to see if it ends up being to your taste.

I emailed Lockman about it a year or so ago and asked if they were going to offer the version with the notes at Barnes & Noble or Kobo. Their response was that they were sorry, but they weren't. They suggested that I could use the Kindle for PC app to read it if I really wanted to and thank you for your continued interest in Lockman Bibles.

But, but ... the best thing of all is that I tried it with my ESV Study Bible and it worked!! This one was the lone standout of all my Bibles/study Bibles that just refused to convert to epub (file was just too large/complex), and I've been trying a loooong time. Calibre would be chugging away at it for hours and the conversion would inevitably just timeout. I eventually gave up and resorted to using it only in the Kindle app. Anyway, because of your suggestion, I tried it with the plugin; I started the process around midday and just left it alone. I actually forgot all about it until I checked it out a few minutes ago and saw that it hatched a lovely epub file. I'm so thrilled I can now use it in the Marvin app on my iPad!
