99 Cent Women's Interest Kindle Ebook--Letting Go of Perfect

I'm posting this book under the "Christian Interest" thread instead of the "Non-Fiction" thread because of the author's reference and reliance on the Bible.

Letting Go of Perfect: Women, Expectations, and Authenticity. By Amy Spiegel. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 13 reviews. Print list price $14.99; Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Letting-Go-Per...d+Authenticity.

Book Description
Have you ever felt as though you didn’t recognize yourself in the mirror and yet you’re frantically trying to keep that image together? Felt bound by the dreams you had for life that you now realize have forced other expectations on you? Or maybe you’ve laughed at one of those insanely ridiculous moments in the day when absolutely everything goes wrong and no matter what you do, the grand purpose seems elusive.

Let’s be honest. We all have a standard in our head that we believe is the perfect Christian woman, wife, and/or mother. Yet, have you ever really examined what that standard is? Yes, God absolutely has standards for what those roles are to be, but is He our source, or is it the peer-pressure-don’t- be-the-odd-one-out-on-Sunday-morning drive to fit in that is driving us away from authenticity and raw faith to outward performance?

Amy Spiegel knows this struggle well and notes, “so many of the women I know seem to feel the same tension in their own lives, teetering on the edge, praying someone will be there to catch them if they fall.” There is a grand purpose to where you are today; join Amy in
Letting Go of Perfect, to look at what it means to truly know the woman in the mirror as well as the God who created, redeems, and equips her.

Compare Psalm 3 in the 1977 edition and 1995 edition.

The original ebooks from Lockman are pretty bad. Neither include the translators' notes and the formatting is pretty poor. There's a newer edition at Amazon that includes the notes, but I haven't looked at it, since it's not available in epub. Thomas Nelson's study Bible editions are fine, though.
Thanks for the feedback! The 1995 edition sounds more like my speed. I tried the sample at Amazon and the formatting on the Lockman edition is indeed quite lacking. Thomas Nelson's editions seem to come only in two options: The MacArthur Study Bible (I already own this in NKJV) and the Charles F. Stanley Life Principles Bible (not keen on Charles Stanley's theology so I'll skip this one). As you noted, I can't seem to find the NASB in epub; I may have to overlook my aversion to the formatting and just pick one up from Amazon.

I had to check myself for the NASB in ePub; I just couldn't believe that it wasn't available in that format. I checked Christianbook.com, which I felt that if anyone had it, it would be them, with their enormous inventory. Nope, not available.

Now I'm wondering why. I personally like the NASB and use it almost exclusively for reading, studying, et al. I think that it is a popular version; I think that I heard several years ago that Billy Graham recommended it. Maybe it has to do with the Lockman Foundation and licensing issues. I hope that this is not a bad "omen" concerning the future of the NASB.

I guess the reason that I hadn't noticed before now is that I often use Bible programs to do my reading and the NASB is commonly available among them. Of course, I keep a legacy paper & leather copy for various reasons.

You implied that it is available at Amazon. If it is not DRM protected (I don't know much about this, so I'm "winging it"), I think that you can use a free program called Calibre to convert it to ePub (and other formats, for that matter). But, I have a feeling (a sixth sense?) that all of the newer, in copyright versions are going to be DRM protected.

Good "luck."

Kindle Freebie on Africans and Africa in the Bible

My posting of this post does not necessarily mean that I endorse any doctrinal, political, or other position taken in the book. I only post it because it looks like it would be an interesting study of a biblical subject.

Africans and Africa in the Bible. By Timothy B. Welch. Rated 5 stars, but from only 1 review (the book has been published only recently). Digital list price $4.99; Kindle price now $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/Africans-Afric...a+in+the+bible. 327 pages!

Book Description
This book shows the presence and the participation of Africans in the biblical text, helping demonstrate that Christianity is not a "white man's religion," and that Christianity has deep roots in African soil. It looks at all those in the Bible who can legitimately be considered as African, supporting its findings with both ancient and modern scholarship. Extensive appendices indicate precisely the African people and places mentioned either directly or indirectly in the Christian Scriptures, supporting the premise that Africans are not simply recipients of the Gospel message, but they are an integral part of it. It is time for the Church in Africa to recognize its very rich biblical heritage.

Massive Markdown on Ebook Harmonizing Science and the Bible--Multiple Formats

I've put a duplicate post in the "Non-Fiction" thread.

Redeeming Science: A God-Centered Approach. By Vern S. Poythress. Rated 4 stars from 14 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $25.00; digital list price $15.99; Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Redeeming-Scie...tered+Approach. THe ebook is also available, in ePub, for just $0.79 at Christianbook: http://www.christianbook.com/redeemi...N&view=details. It is the regular price at Kobo, at this writing.

Book Description
Many people think science is antagonistic to Christian belief. Science, it is said, shows that the universe is billions of years old, while the Bible says it is only thousands of years old. And some claim that science shows supernatural miracles are impossible. These and other points of contention cause some Christians to view science as a threat to their beliefs.

Redeeming Science attempts to kindle our appreciation for science as it ought to be-science that could serve as a path for praising God and serving fellow human beings. Through examining the wonderfully complex and immutable laws of nature, author Vern Poythress explains, we ought to recognize the wisdom, care, and beauty of God. A Christian worldview restores a true response to science, where we praise the God who created nature and cares for it.

It is available at Amazon and I could convert it through Calibre but Bibles are notoriously troublesome to convert; they're huge and they have all these linked notes. I'd rather spare myself the aggravation. While I decide what I want to do, I'll probably try accessing it through BibleGateway or someplace like that.

The NASB with notes is in the AZW3 format, which includes an embedded epub. If you're handy with Calibre, you can use Calibre to remove the DRM and then use the KindleUnpack plugin to extract the (more-or-less) original epub without actually having to do a conversion. If you might want to go that route, you can try it out on the sample to see if it ends up being to your taste.

I do all my reading on an Android tablet, so I ended up using Bible apps for the NASB. I bought it a long time ago for Logos and so still have access to it from their Android app. I also just recently bought it to use in the Tecarta app for $4.99 (well, I used a bunch of free Amazon Coins, so I ultimately got it for free) and am happy with that one, as well.

If you happen to start looking at the Tecarta app, download the free KJV version first and check the in-app prices first because the in-app purchase prices are sometimes different than the bundled app from the stores.

I emailed Lockman about it a year or so ago and asked if they were going to offer the version with the notes at Barnes & Noble or Kobo. Their response was that they were sorry, but they weren't. They suggested that I could use the Kindle for PC app to read it if I really wanted to and thank you for your continued interest in Lockman Bibles.

I tried the NASB sample and yes, I was able to pluck out the epub file using the KindleUnpack plugin.

But, but ... the best thing of all is that I tried it with my ESV Study Bible and it worked!! This one was the lone standout of all my Bibles/study Bibles that just refused to convert to epub (file was just too large/complex), and I've been trying a loooong time. Calibre would be chugging away at it for hours and the conversion would inevitably just timeout. I eventually gave up and resorted to using it only in the Kindle app. Anyway, because of your suggestion, I tried it with the plugin; I started the process around midday and just left it alone. I actually forgot all about it until I checked it out a few minutes ago and saw that it hatched a lovely epub file. I'm so thrilled I can now use it in the Marvin app on my iPad!

Modern Life Study Bible, Marked Down Sharply--in Mobi and EPub

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: I failed to mention that the Bible text is that of the NKJV (New King James Version).

This is a "brand new" study Bible, having been published just this year (2014).

The Modern Life Study Bible: God's Word for Our World. Thomas Nelson. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 20 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $49.99; Kindle price now $4.99. http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Life-St...+for+Our+World. It is also available from Christianbook (ePub) at the same price, $4.99: http://www.christianbook.com/Christi...72&event=ESRCG. At this writing it is the usual price at Kobo; I didn't check anywhere else.

My posting of this book does not necessarily mean that I endorse doctrinal positions taken by writers of the non-Bible text.

Book Description (from Christianbook.com)
As members of the modern age, we sometimes feel disconnected from the world of the Bible. But if we look closely, we can see that although cultures change, our basic challenges stay the same. We still struggle with issues like community, justice, economic stress, political tensions, and cultural and ethnic differences. We still wonder who God is, how to discern His will, and how we fit into His plan.

Using historical context and fresh insights backed by biblical scholars,
The Modern Life Study Bible explores the timeless truths that connect the people and stories of the Bible to the opportunities and demands we face today. God is at work in our world, inviting us to experience His presence.

With innovative, full-color illustrations, maps, and diagrams, along with special information on occupations of the Bible, profiles of people and places, theme indexes, and inspirational biographies of believers who put their faith to work, "The Modern Life Study Bible" draws you in, helping you to know and embrace what it means to follow Christ in today's world.

Features

-More than 2,400 concise articles and book introductions
-More than 220 full-color maps

Four Vol.s of Reclaiming the Christian Intellectual Tradition--99 Cents Each or Less

Four books in the "Reclaiming the Christian Intellectual Tradition" have been marked down dramatically--up to 92%! Use of one or more discount codes can bring the price down even further.

My posting of these books does not necessarily mean that I endorse any of the doctrinal or political positions taken by the writers.

Here are the volumes which have been marked down. (Note: I am not giving the Web addresses for Kobo. I've noticed that searching for a book on their site, using even the full title, sometimes does not return a hit. If you do not have success searching by title, try using the author's full name as the search terms).

Literature: A Student's Guide. By Louis A. Markos. Rated 4 1/2 stars at Amazon but from only 3 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $11.99; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Literature-Rec...students+guide. The price is $0.79 at Christianbook. http://www.christianbook.com/literat...N&view=details. At Kobo, it is $0.99, but discountable.

Book Description (from Amazon)
Enjoying poetry and novels can seem irrelevant and out of touch in a world of texting, tweeting, and blogging. But even in this technological age literature matters.

Seasoned professor Louis Markos invites us into the great literary conversation that has been taking place throughout the ages and illuminates the wisdom to be found therein. He offers both a guide to studying and understanding literature, especially poetry, and an inspiring look at what it means to think like poets and view the world through literary eyes. This book holds out a truth for all: that the understanding and appreciation of literature draws us closer to God, his Word, and his work in the world.

The Liberal Arts: A Student's Guide. By Gene C. Fant, Jr. Not rated at Amazon at the present time. Print list price $11.99; digital list price $9.99. Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Arts-R...students+guide. The price at Christianbook is $0.79 for this volume as well. http://www.christianbook.com/the-lib...N&view=details. At Kobo, it is $0.99, again, but discountable.

Book Description (from Amazon)
An excellent liberal arts education holds purpose-giving and society-shaping power. But how do we tap into that power and make the most of liberal learning for the glory of God?

Professor Gene Fant teaches how to maximize a liberal arts education by outlining its history, criticisms, purposes, and benefits. Ultimately, he shows that liberal learning equips us to become spiritually and intellectually empathetic people who are passionate about serving God, the church, and the world.

Christian Worldview: A Student's Guide. By Philip Graham Ryken. Not rated at Amazon at the present moment. Print list price $11.99; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Christian-Worl...students+guide. Again, the price at Christianbook is $0.79.http://www.christianbook.com/christi...N&view=details. Once again, at Kobo it is $0.99 but discountable.

Book Description (from Amazon)
Everything we think, say, and do reflects our worldview. Whether we realize it or not, basic beliefs about God, humanity, history, and the future inevitably shape how we live.

Philip Ryken, prolific author and president of Wheaton College, explains the distinguishing marks of the Christian worldview, helping us to engage thoughtfully with our increasingly pluralistic society. Based on the notion that ideas have consequences, this accessible resource will help you see life’s “big picture” by equipping you with a well-reasoned framework of Christian beliefs and convictions.

Political Thought: A Student's Guide. By Hunter Baker. Rated 5 stars at Amazon, but from only 6 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $11.99; digital list price $9.99. Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Political-Thou...students+guide. At Christianbook, this volume is $0.79 also. http://www.christianbook.com/politic...N&view=details. The price at Kobo, again, is $0.99, but it is discountable.

Book Description (from Amazon)
Politics affect everyone everywhere. Yet most people do not know how to communicate or think methodically (much less unemotionally) about the issues at hand. What we need is for our thinking to be grounded in the basic framework of order, freedom, justice, and equality.

Award-winning professor Hunter Baker helps political amateurs gain a foundational understanding of the subject and encourages seasoned political observers to find a fresh perspective in this book. Learn how to fruitfully consider and discuss politics, and gain a greater capacity for evaluating political proposals and the claims that go with them.

There's been a weird flurry of study Bible sales over the last few days, so I've kind of become a little numb. These two, though, managed to show up at Kobo, where the PERKOPOLIS coupon code is worth 40% off, bringing the final price to $2.99.

Both are the NKJV editions. Both are available for $4.99 at other sellers (or at Kobo if you don't use the code).
