I find a lot to shake my head at in that passage, but I think it would all tangential to the thread topic at best.
We agree that all big complicated software will likely cause problems for some people, and some big complicated software can be better or worse than other big complicated software.

Probably because the Mac is a tightly-controlled environment that's all under Apple's control. A PC is much more challenging, with a whole raft of different video drivers, network cards, sound cards, etc, to have to deal with. An awful lot of problems I get reported with the software I develop and sell myself turn out to be due to buggy video drivers, for example.

Because many of the technologies used in iTunes are native to OS X.

My music collection is just short of 30000 songs, mediamonkey does everything you want. Since I discovered it I never looked back.

The best thing to do is try it. You can install it in Portable mode so its self contained.

There's Songbird, too, but as soon as you want to manage other-than-music on your iDevice, you need iTunes. You *can* just do it all over wifi and never touch itunes, but I have found (yes even on my mac) that there can be pitfalls with that (for example, a failed iOS update which left my iPad unusable until I plugged it in and restored it via iTunes). I also use iTunes and my computer for backups in preference to iCloud. But thats just me.

If you have an idevice and nothing has ever gone wrong with it through *not* using iTunes, you're lucky.
