how about new Kindle Paperwhite 2014 buyer? Does it come with newest version?
It seems easy on paper thinking. Pw2 has 2GB/4GB storage, I delete all files, and someoney shares an .iso file contain firmware 5.4 as full capacity storage, and mount it ![]() Sorry for my stupid thinking. |

The problem is that we don't have CLI access on the Kindle, so we cannot "mount the ISO", and we certainly cannot write the partition images we do have.
Amazon provides full partition images as part of their official updates, that isn't the problem. The problem is getting the Kindle to use the update/image/etc. If you peel open the case and connect to the serial port, you can get a root shell, and from there you can do anything you need to. But currently that is the ONLY way to get control of a Kindle on fw>=5.6.0 -- unless you are already jailbroken. |

The 2015 Paperwhite will not ship until next week (in the USA), and Amazon has never shipped a new product with less than newest firmware. You need a serial port connection to **any** Kindle running either the 5.5.x or 5.6.x series firmware. Otherwise (in case you missed it on the prior page): |

call me stupid but why jailbreak a ebook reader? It is only for reading books for Christ sake. When I have my PW2 awake I am reading a book, and 99% of the time I do not even have the WIFI own. I do not see the need or even what screen savers. And the fonts that are already on my PW2 are just fine with me.

Maybe that is **your** only purpose, but ..... Originally, and still somewhat today, the Amazon e-book reader was a marketing research tool. That purpose sparked the interest in taking control of the e-book reader's behavior by the e-book's owner. Jail breaking is a significant part of accomplishing that control. Another community interest point - Some people are interested in Embedded Computer Systems - - something becoming ever more present in consumer electronics. (Its been a key component of commercial electronics for decades.) Check the prices of a decent, general purpose, embedded system development board - A Kindle is about 1/10 the price. And people tell me (repeatedly) that you can also read books with them, when not playing with the hardware and firmware. Although that is just a rumor to me - I have never tried to put mine to such a far-out use as reading books with them. |

I will just use it for what I bought it for and that is to read books. I will leave my playing with real computers to real computers. Also after 25 years of being in the computer hardware and software business I am so very tired of programing and even design. All I want to do is every now and then read my email, check on the news and weather, and oh yes read, read, read books.

You appear to be suggesting, though (and please forgive me if I've misunderstood you) that this should also be the case for everyone else who buys a Kindle. Surely you can accept that different people will have different motivations?

I understand that the Kindle really is a computer, but limited. All I am saying is that I bought it for reading and that is all I am going to do on it. I have plenty of other computers, and tablets to do other things with. I could even read my ebooks on the tablets and computers but that is not really a good thing for the old tired eyes. E-ink is for reading and that is what I will use it for. |

There are a (very) small number of people who jailbreak and use their Kindle as a general computing system. I see no problem with that, assuming you know why you bought it and what you want to do with it.
For a more generally applicable reason, how is this for thought -- many of our jailbreak add-ons greatly enhance reading on a Kindle. Some people like the Kindle ecosystem, but also would like font flexibility. They are a valid userbase. Some people want to manage collections. Some people want to enhance the margins. Some people want to have nice screensavers -- I personally use the front cover of whichever book is open. Some people want to protect their privacy, whatever that means. ![]() Some people want a better PDF reader on their E-Ink device, for when they read the odd PDF. The list goes on and on. @cvkemp -- Forgive me, but the question seems rather frivolous. All you have really established is that you personally don't get any value-added benefits, and you mentioned in your own post the idea of screensavers and fonts. You have answered your own question, within your question... None of these things would exist if there wasn't someone who found it beneficial. Thus, the mere fact that a jailbreak exists is proof positive that there is a reason. Now, if your question was: "is there any reason for me, personally, to jailbreak?" I would say, no, not really. If you are happy with your Kindle as is, then that is perfectly OK. Last edited by eschwartz; 06-26-2015 at 01:21 PM. Reason: typo |

Although running under the Hercules emulator - the KT's performance of OS-360 was surprisingly close to that of some of the oldest, lowest (entry) level, IBM hardware. Such is progress. Yes, you can read your e-mail, check the news and weather on your Kindle, you don't need a "real computer" for that either. - - - - So far, the only thing I have read is a matter of "personal preference" - which should be always valid. You have yours, I have mine. |

Those where just built for the Kindles as a technical challenge and posted for the one or two people who might have been interested. Things like: Cobol/360 under OS-360 on the Kindle Touch. Just for those old-timers that haven't programmed anything since Cobol. ![]() Last edited by knc1; 06-26-2015 at 01:11 PM. |
