I pay a minimum of 6 dollars a month (comes off my water bill) up to 12 dollars a month for library use--whether I use it or not. Nope, it isn't free. But it's still a very good bargain. I hope someday overdrive has more books I want to read. I just checked out two this week and neither were my thing. I have one more on hold. They always have the best sellers from the past (when available they have the newer ones too) but I'm finding I have either already read those or never wanted to. Not that it keeps me from checking out books. I just have to go in and pick up the print copies of the stuff I really want to read. The instant download of the kindle has spoiled me!

It's totally enriched me. I absolutely refuse to pay for ebooks. In the past, I had to either buy or borrow paper books; and that required travel expenses to get to the store, library, or a friend.
Now it's a one-time fee for an ereader and a free download from the library or Amazon; all from the comfort of my home. What's not to like about this setup? |

Only for German books, foreign books can be sold at any price. English ebooks in Germany are competitively priced in my experience.
I wonder though ... do you actually do the comparison for every book you want to buy or do you just assume it is cheaper? |

The mini survey's results aren't surprising to me. It's not so different from many other products where people develop loyalty to a specific vendor. Usually for convenience, cf. in the PC video gaming market where most people won't even buy games elsewhere if not offered on Steam, even if other places sometimes have better sales or a different selection.
Personally, I buy ebooks mostly from Kobobooks, at least the more commercial stuff from large publishers. I never buy anything there without a discount coupon, but also don't compare prices. If the price after the discount is OK for me, then I make the purchase. It's mostly for convenience and I can pay via PayPal, which I prefer over bank transfers and cards (Amazon doesn't offer PayPal as a payment method and I feel they are too big anyway). I also buy books from independent places such as Baen and Smashwords. I used to get ebooks from iBooks, but the inability to deal with the DRM painlessly and read my purchased books on a device of my choice ended that. |

Lee Child ebook in paperback format: $6,99 The same Lee Child ebook in "Airport format": $16,99 (for those not in the know, they are larger, with the same text, fontsize a little larger and weight a lot more). Exact same content, twice the price. ?? I ran away from Amazon immeditely I saw this - by the way, the books were in English. I quite liked my Kindle Kbd, but saw the Kobo Aura advertised. A lot more money, but the addition of a backlight and a micro-SD slot, plus the much larger viewing area, tempted me. It also supports mobi and epub, which not many ebook readers do. Thought I would alternate between the two, but within a couple of days my Kindle Kbd was left to languish, alone and no longer loved, on my bookshelf. I loan it out now to people who want to try an eReader but don't want to invest straight off. Most get converted. Last edited by pdurrant; 01-26-2014 at 09:36 AM. Reason: fixed quotation tags |

This larger format is known as 'trade paperback' in the US. It's effectively the text block of a hardback but in a paperback cover. I hated them when I bought paperbooks. Most of the weight and expense of a hardback with none of the advantages.

Trade paperback is going to outlive the mass market paperback format because it is better suited for POD.
A lot of indies are expanding their reach by adding POD to their ebook releases, pricing their ebooks at US$5 and the tpb at $16 or so, list. Allowing for normal discounting, that gets their pbooks into bookstores at $10-12. |

Loyal ?? Mmm.
I think the reason people stay are more like : - Don't need a new e-reader - Works for me why change a wining team? - They don't want to bother with / don't know how un-DRM and convert current library |

I know how to remove Drm and do so on all my purchases but I buy from Amazon. It is convenient and I am fine with their prices.
