I've managed to bring up the database in KOBO Utlities but that's only got rid of the duplicates, I have old collections I need to get rid off, how can I do that?

Edited to say, I seem to be able to delete them manually now.

Thanks for your help Peter and davidfor

Like most Unix based devices, Kobo uses a single linefeed (LF) character as the end of line (EOL) instead of the DOS based carriage return/line feed pair (CR/LF). My preference is to use Notepad++ as an editor since it allows selecting and changing the end of line character(s).

On a Windows system, Wordpad will correctly display the kobo_ereader.conf file but on a save, it will convert the EOL from LF to a CR/LF pair.

So, if someone happened to save the file in word pad, would it be necessary to do a reset or sign out sign in and get back a new .conf file to make things work correctly?

No, at the most, the config file would get set back to the defaults. But, I just did a quick test opening the file with WordPad and saving it. The firmware handled it without any problems.

As far as I know, Kobo's firmware will interpret the .conf file even it it has CR/LF pairs and will re-write it without the CRs if you make any changes that modify the .conf file. OTOH, I've run into problems before with using text files that have CR/LFs on Unix systems so prefer to avoid any potential issues. I can generate enough problems on my own.

I have been using wordpad to open the .conf file and do the edits because the formatting makes it easier to see what is there. I then copy the text without saving into my .conf backup which is a notepad created file and save it onto the device. Nice to know that the additional step is probably not a big deal with the kobo (though I am with you about generating problems on my own, oy)

As already noted, using Notepad++ is the easiest way to handle the issue, but finding and replacing any 0d hex with a HexEditor is a quick and easy way to be sure.

My one sentence post starts with an endorsement for using Notepad++. I would think you could agree that a "typical user", even as you seem to perceive them, could use that program to save script files with the needed end of line treatment. I guess I have a different impression of what a "typical user", who is modifying or learning to modify script files, would find intelligible. There might be more users out there who have a HexEditor than you realize. It would be my hope that those who can figure it out find it a useful and informative approach. But, no one need even try this solution, I will not become upset and post something disparaging at a suggestion that there may be a different way to arrive at a solution. (By the way, what's wrong with "brute force"?)

I still don't understand how to edit the kobo ereader config file. Hopefully I won't need to but it would still be nice to do just to ensure Kobo can't muck up my collections again.

@Josieb1: Well, I'm using the text editor Notepad++ to edit files from unix/linux machines on Windows. The editor recognizes the file origin (Windows, MAC, Linux ect.) automatically when you open a file. And keeps the correct linefeeds while saving.

Here you go: Notepad++ - it's free.

Thanks Koboyashi

Can anyone tell me please how to insert the SyncShelves=false statement. Do I just insert SyncShelves=false like this, without anything between what was there? So nothing between the ] and the 6? or do i just need the = between the e and the 6?

You need linefeeds - they're lost while editing with a 'wrong' program. To repair your 'Kobo eReader.conf', just open it
with Notepad++ and split it into lines (in other words, insert linefeeds):
Code:
[General]
selectionStyle=underline
[ApplicationPreferences]
SyncShelves=false
66666333=true
AIRPLANE_MODE=true
BrightnessOpenCount =-1
... where the key 'SyncShelves' must be in section '[ApplicationPreferences]'. Now the important part. Make sure
that you're saving the file as a Linux file. Go to 'Edit -> EOL Conversion -> Convert to UNIX format' and click it. The
entry becomes grey - now you can save the config file.
If you like to edit the file again (with Notepad++) you don't need to convert again.

Generally, the syntax of the config file is:
Code:
[SectionName]
KeyName=Value
AnotherKeyName=Value
[AnotherSectionName]
YetAnotherKeyName=Value
KeyName=Value
MySpecialKeyName=Value
The key order within each section doesn't matter. But it's important, that a key sits in the appropriate section. This is
the same syntax like a normal Windows INI file - except for the different linefeeds of course

Regards,
Koboyashi
