Well, I have family, and friends... but I would be suprised if they would read one novel a year, even if they'd split up the book among the lot of them

Most of them haven't even touched a book after leaving school.

I use good reads, occasionally on here, share book recs occasionally with friends and discuss paranormal fiction with my boss. My family as a rule don't read and I now get told to not buy any of the children books

Some of the books I read are too political and too hot topic for me to publicize. So no.

I started keeping track of what I am reading on Goodreads in 2012, but only for myself. I don't publicize to people I know in real life what I am reading, other than swap recommendations with my sister, because we like the same genres, and very seldomly with a friend who also likes SciFi.

The main reason I started tracking my reads was the fact that in series, I sometimes forget which number I am at (titles are often similar), and that I previously had no clue how many books I was reading per year. In Goodreads, I rate but don't always review the books I read, and when I do write a review, I post it to Amazon as well.

I track everything I read. Well I do now since getting my kindle in 2008. Its how I find other stuff to read. I list what I read, then I can pick up books from others that like stuff I like.
I don't have any real life friends that read and I like sharing with other readers.

I also don't care what anyone thinks about my reading choices. I would carry a paperback with a cover of fabio with flowing hair around and don't care.
I read what I want.
Now of course I only read on my kindle as my eyesight is going down the drain. Paperback fonts are getting a bit hard. So its mostly all ebooks.

I have spreadsheets for my own use, 3 of them for what I read. I track on goodreads, booklikes, I talk about books here in the romance thread on mobilereads, I hang out on another romance thread on another forum, I browse through genre specific blogs, etc.
I have to track the books I read. I read a bit and a lot of series. I have to read everything in order the OCD way, so I have to track to know whats next.

Reading is so much easier now than it was before the internet. Easier to find specific things to read, easier and fun to hook up with other readers from around the world and of course ebooks on e-ink. Heaven.

Isn't that the truth! I have never read more in my life than I have this past year and I just started tracking all my reading in 2012. I was shocked to see I had read more than 108 books this year so far when I checked a few weeks ago. I love the stats!

Your post reminded me of my FIL, who used to put his initials in every library book he checked out so he would stop checking out books he'd already read!

Excactly this. My husband knows (somewhat) what I'm reading and that's enough.

Usually. I post what I'm reading on GR most of the time and I review a lot of it there too. If a book is something that will interest my blog readers, I blog about it. Or if a book really ticks me off, I'll blog about it too.

I don't always "push" the book out to twitter or fb--it depends on the book. My FB is a weird mix of friends, fans, relatives and I don't like to inundate them with all my reading material simply because I read a lot.

Some of it is mood dependent and I might not blog a book or review it because I'm just tired of doing so.

I list on Goodreads soley for my own benefit. I joined the Challenge a couple of years ago and found that actually to be good therapy.

Lot of closet readers out there. I have had people I would have sworn didn't read ask me about ereaders and proceed to get one and devour books.

Perhaps I made the assumption that they didn't read because they were not traditionally educated, or because I never saw them with a book.

The assumption was stupid because I am not traditionally educated and they did not see me with a book either until I got my first ereader.

How true. For some reason we are quick to judge based upon what we see, even though we ought to know from our own lives that there is a lot that others don't see in us. (Sometimes because we keep those things private, and sometimes because certain aspects of our lives don't relate to other people.)

One of the fun things about Vancouver was watching the street people read, sometimes in libraries and sometimes on the streets. It's not something that I thought that segment of society would do. But they do, and some of them are fairly well educated regardless of their circumstances.

No, I know for 100% sure that they don't read. Ever. Some of them see it as a waste of time (but they do play video games...), and my sister practically vomits when I say "book". I think she may be considering to use "read a book" as a punishment for her daughter

Same for me.
Also it's nice sometimes to talk a bit further about a book.
I keep track of what I read in Goodreads but my profile is restricted to friends. Since I like a broad range of genres, I usually don't mind sharing what I read. However I can't tell I'll always list each and every book I'm going to read.

I have a friend that I talk to about some things I read, when it's a book in a genre that we both like. That's the extent of my publicizing what I read. I have other friends and some family that are avid readers, but our interests don't really coincide so we don't share.
