I started on Android because it was sorta required to get a 4G LTE phone when signing up for Verizon Wireless unlimited data on the last days they offered it. The iPhone was not yet 4G.
Now after a few years of use, I'm at the point where my requirements pretty much eliminate the iPhone: - at least a 4.3" screen - a keyboard that my big hands can use. (Swype, Google Keyboard, MessageEase....) I rarely (and poorly) tap type. - certain apps only available on Android, like the home video streaming apps for old Sony video streamers (ThereTV) or for Silicon Dust, or server apps (IP Webcam, Servers Ultimate Pro). I also highly prefer: - replacable batteries (though disappearing from many of the latest high end Android phones) - micro SD slot (though disappearing from many of the latest high end Android phones) - wireless charging - multitasking - Android's better notifications None of the above are available on any iPhone. I'm also "invested" in "paid" Android apps. The quotes are there because I've gotten most of the paid apps for free from Amazon's Free App of the Day, or for $0.10 or $0.25 during Google celebrations, probably only spending $25 in total for over 200 "paid" apps. Throw me a bone, Apple, and give me something from the lists above, and I'll consider trying an iPhone on a second line. I guess for the reportedly more stable apps, and to be able to Facetime with family who are entrenched in Apple's walled garden. I can't think of any other reasons. |

EDIT: Image exceeded 600x600? Does that mean we can no longer embed XKCD cartoons like I did (which was deleted)... What about all the existing XKCD embeds from past years by myself and others? Will they be deleted too? I try to make them relevant to the thread, and add a little (much needed) humor... This new rule is a HUGE bummer (and a huge mistake, IMHO)... Which is exactly why Android is so successful. It caters to both types. Works great out of the box or you can customize the hell out of it.

I've owned a windows phone and iPhone. I really liked the build quality of the windows phone (nokia one) but hated the OS. I prefer the iPhone out of the two, but the longer I've owned it, the more and more I feel restricted in my uses of it by Apple and thats really putting me off getting another (same for iPad). Saying that, I wouldn't want a newer iOS device anyway as I'm not keen on the way Apple are heading with iOS 7.
Once my iPhone eventually dies, I'll likely check out the various android options as well as any new open systems that may exist by then. The most open device will likely get my money. Last edited by JoeD; 12-07-2013 at 09:15 AM. |

There are a few things that iOS does better -- like cloud sync, for example. But I think overall Android does more things better now for a mobile platform. That would have been hard to say maybe a year or two ago, but Android has come a long way fast.

When I add a new appointment in my calendar it appears on the other device. It also syncs Hangouts instant message conversations in real time. Photos are synced whenever I charge (by my choice, it could happen at any point but I'd rather wait for charging) and e-mails, address book entries, and created documents also appear on both devices. The same is true for my regular web browsing: my search history, bookmarks, passwords and URL history is also synced. The only thing that's not synced that I would like to be synced is reminders created in Google now. If I'm on my tablet and say "Hey Google, when I get to Food Basics, remind me to buy milk" it will not sync to my phone, so when I get to Food Basics it won't remind me. Unless I bring my tablet that is, but I never do, so... Anyway, if iOS is actually better than what I described above, it'd be cool to hear in what way. I know this post may come across as if I'm a butthurt Android defender, but I genuinely want to know if there's something more to syncing that what I'm getting right now. |

I enjoy the Android experience more than iOS. I like widgets and how I can customize Android to look and feel to my liking.
I have a Note 2, and I really enjoy the large screen. Which is larger than the entire iPhone 5s. This makes Android a better reading experience for me. |

I've owned numerous Android phones starting with the original G1. Universal to all: I love the customization options for Android. I didn't love the poor battery life or the degrading performance. In order to eek out tolerable battery life and performance, I had to spend a lot of time tweaking and experimenting. Although there was improvement, the results still weren't great. I switched to an iPhone 4. Battery life and performance was and still is amazing (running iOS 5). But it seemed like using the iPhone as a phone is an afterthought. For example: No indicator lights... if I received a call or txt msg when the phone was not with me, there is no visible way to know it without turning on the screen. Lack of customization was another issue. I then saw the Lumia 520 for $67 (no contract). I was a big fan of the Zune and know that much of the Zune HD's UI design found its way into WP8. So I wanted to give it a try. I've been using it as my primary phone for 2+ weeks. I'm getting battery life that is nearly as good as my iPhone (2-3 days between charges), performance that is fluid and crisp, and the ability to configure the screen with live tiles that provide me with the information that I feel I need to have on the phone's main screen. I'm still working through the apps for WP8, determining what I still need and what things are simply a hold-over from those other environments and if there is a better way to do things. |

I have an iphone, BUT it was a gift. I would never buy one. It is very easy to use, but apple control it out of control. I can buy a mp3 song, BUT I am not allowed to use it as my ring tone, I have to buy the SAME song again as a ring tone. Greedy is the word.
I just brought, it has not arrived yet, a kogan agora HD. This is an android. applesauce |

I don't really care for phones. But I have an Ipad so I guess my scales would rather tip the Apple way
