Three options: T.V., Movie (theatre), or book.

We got rid of the cable TV years ago, go to the movies (generally once a week) and read pretty much all the time. So I would have to say book for my choice.

It.seems.that I always enjoy the eBook over having to watch the television.

I enjoy the time with, but I have a great deal of difficulty watching anything.

When we did have cable, I'd have a very few shows that I wanted to watch, but whenever they were on (and this was long enough ago that we didn't have DVR) she'd always ask me to do something during the commercials that lasted longer than the breaks.

She also tends to stop movies (when we play them at home) sufficiently frequently that I lose interest.

End result, I really can't watch movies anymore. I just looked at the movie shelf and realized I have movies I bought seven or eight years ago, that I still haven't watched. I can never count on the time to watch them so I don't watch much of anything except the occasional reality show with her (no plot so I can come and go).

Watching a flick with my grillfiend is easy because she's as morbid and particular as I: We both prefer grim subject matter and abhor bad writing. Often, documentaries win over theater releases because supposedly dark flicks can be cliche-ridden abysses of ineptitude, and standard fare is usually far too cheerful, but a well-researched documentary on death can prove useful to both of us creatively (and also relaxes us).

Sometimes one of us reads while the other watches a film silently. Headphones are a minor hobby of mine, but she tends to be the one who ends up wearing them.

Sometimes we read different books at the same time and that's our third version of movie night. A few months ago, she and I even read the same book simultaneously (My Work Is Not Yet Done, by Thomas Ligotti). We were almost in sync even though she was reading on her Nook ST and I had my PRS-350. We also laughed at many of the same passages, which made the experience a lot like watching a film.

We do the same sort of thing creatively, too: I write fiction or compose music while she paints, draws or makes mixed media collages in the next room. That's my idea of heaven.

It's also fun when her twin (a fine artist as well) stops by and the two of them paint in the next room while I work. It's like spending the afternoon with the Brontes, which is what I've always wanted.

I don't have the same taste in movies as my husband, so I probably would watch 15 minutes of the movie, and then go read my book. The problem is it is very hard to knit and read-knitting and movies is a great combination.

A no brainer - I'd watch the movie. I'm a big movie fan anyway, but reading is mostly a solitary hobby. Well, unless you are both listening to the same audiobook.

I know how you feel!

We didn't get a lot of music composition or artwork done last weekend -- and I was the only person who, in Joyce's words, "read ten pages of ten different books" -- but I did finish the first third of Alban Berg and His World while my grillfiend watched a documentary on the extinction of aquatic dinosaurs. The next night, we watched The Hourglass Sanatorium, by Wozcieck Has (brilliant cinematography), and two episodes of a BBC documentary on birds (what awful music!).

Yeah, I really love being with an artistic lady. And it's cool that your grillfiend (wait, is that intentional?) paints.

Yes, it's intentional.

She and I have a few friends with similar interests, but we've yet to attempt a quadruple movie/book (art/music/writing) night!

If my wife is with me, I'll watch a movie or TV show with her. We talk about what we are watching so we still interact. However, reading is a solitary act.

A grillfiend... Is that a very demonic barbecue chef? Then I want one too!
