Skittels--In case you don't know, there is a hack you can apply that will allow you to do just that (fully power down by holding down the "enter" button for five seconds).
It was posted here by JS Wolf: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23143 Great hack! Also adds a clock to the page number bar, nicer icons, and same size fonts in the menus. Makes my 505 look much nicer! Be aware that if you do this it will take awhile for your reader to boot back up next time you turned it on. dordale ![]() |

Sigh, it took 350 pages and two days to lose a bar. Even taking into account turning on and off (standby i mean) and such and being super generous, that's 500 pages a bar. this is without formatting any thing new whatsoever, or using an sd card

Another possibility is that battery is not correctly calibrated yet. I noticed that the battery indicator is incorrect until several (or more like 10 times) recharge cycle is done. I would suggest you to wait and see how the battery performs after several or more recharge cycles.

Read this to maximize the life of your battery.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery Lithium ion batteries last longer if half charged. Do not discharge a Lithium ion battery and keep away from heat. |

It may be bad calibration, but who knows. My reader was originally bought in Dec and was unused for a while (got from ebay) and it is otherwise in completely new wonderful state. But it may have been part of the bad battery run that I heard about?
Does anyone have an idea of how much a good battery should run for? I want to know how close to a normal battery mine is if I test it one more time before contacting Sony. I know 7500 is unrealistic, but what is? 5000? Assuming no formatting. |

Just Installed JS Wolf's hack, it seems to work for me, would be a real smart deal if that hack could also work as an auto shutdown, not used for x hours > shutdown. i am one of those people forgetting the thing...
But still this is a good improvement as is the clock and the icons. Thanks Dordale and Thanks JS Wolf! |

After having my PRS-505 for about 6 months, my PRS-505 battery is lasting almost a month between recharges. I'm generally charging it about every 3 weeks or so with moderate usage. I only charge it up once it gets down to a single bar of battery left. Usually, what happens is that I sit down to read and finally notice that it's down to 1 bar and then forget for a few more days to actually go hook it up to the laptop to charge it.
The key, I think is that I'm using a MemoryStick Duo add-on card instead of an SD card. (Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo 1GB) As much as I wanted to use an SD card instead, I'm pretty happy with the Sony card. If I do a lot of reading, I have to charge it up more frequently (every 2-3 weeks). But it's a lot better then my cell-phone which goes dead if I forget to look at it for 2-3 days. |

Strangely enough, must have been a calibration issue on my battery. After the third charge or so, I tried testing my battery by flipping through it. I got to p. 1200 before I quit, and it was still at four bars. It did go down the next day, which makes me suspect that the suspend time has a lot to do with our informal battery tests, but I've been reading 30 mins-1 hr a day for the past week since Sunday after another full charge and it's still at 4 bars. I'm happy with the state of my battery. The first couple of times though, the battery meter did seem to go down very quickly in a matter of days.

Interesting - good to hear that it's now behaving as it should.

Turning my device off with the enter button hack has bumped me up from about a weeks worth of charge to what feels infinite.
![]() Refering to JSWolf's post, the new firmware wasn't even out yet on the 13th, was it? Last edited by jakewastaken; 07-30-2008 at 12:07 AM. |

Since I just use the SD for hacking and my reader is normally vertical, I covered both card slots with transparent tape. The plastic cards won't prevent dust from creeping in.

I have not upgraded to the new sony firmware, but I have just now installed the Universal Firmware tweaks. The battery life on my 505 after 30+ charges is not that good. I can go about 1 week per charge, which is only about 250 +/- pages.
I stopped using a flash card about three weeks ago thinking that battery life would improve, but it has not improved by that much. All of my current loaded e-books are only in LRF format and average about 500 pages. I only have about 70 books on the reader at this time. I just now found out that there are at least two v1 firmwares: 1.0.00.08130 1.1.00.18040 My firmware is currently at 1.0.00.08130. I'm starting to wonder now if the difference between users with positive experiences regarding battery life vs. negative experiences is due to the two different 1.x firmwares and possibly the universal flasher mod. Does anyone have any feedback on version 2 firmware battery life? There is very limited documented results on battery life under the v2 firmware. |

I might be wrong, though. I am not unhappy about the battery life myself. You could try the "off button hack" which will enable you to completely shut down the reader. |

The screen is always on NOT in standby mode. I will read whenever I get a few minutes or more so don't really see the advantage of going into standby mode. As a matter of fact I would think that standby mode would use the battery more since the screen has to be refreshed when turned on.
I do see the advantage in the full shutdown, and that may be an option although I don't care for the amount of time it takes to power down/up the unit. For instants I charged the reader on Wednesday and so far have read about 75 pages and am down 1 bar already. Other users have reported going 3 or more weeks between charges and a decent amount of page turns. For thoses user who have not upgraded there firmware I for one would be interested in what 1.X version of firmware they are using, and the equated battery life. I will be upgrading to v2 sometime in the future, but not in a hurry to do it anytime soon as I am still reading the forums on the upgrade results. The only thing that I was looking forward to in v2 is the PDF support and it sounds like that is hit or miss. If there is a improvement in battery life with the new firmware then I will upgrade the unit sooner. |
