Just like copyright law is clear and common knowledge in the general public too...

This isn't a matter of forum rules, it's copyright law as it applies to ebooks.

HarryT has been immersed in the arcainities and inainities of copyright law for many years (he knows way more than I do) and what is obvious to him may be completely unknown to someone who wouldn't think twice about giving a book to a friend, and doesn't see how a file containing a book could be different. These people need to be educated, not hit over the head with a two by four (big stick, for metric folk).

hmm, interesting. Just checked with my Kindle reader for Android and it says 2001 and Rendezvous are "not available as digital downloads from this site". Though there is a Rama Omnibus, but it's got a really low 3* rate... apparently some reviewers didn't like the other novels in the series and also rant about formatting issues. It's however 14 bucks, while Rendezvous alone (not available) was 21 bucks. Go figure...

Speaking of formatting issues in kindle ebooks, I've purchased Stephen King's The dead zone and almost skipped the Prologue! It's not listed in the summary, where it begins on Chapter 1! Good thing I tend to always go from the "cover"...

I have several of Cory Doctorow's (copyrighted) books in epub format. I can send them to anyone who wants them.

Andrew

Edited to add: as pdurrant explains below, the point I was making rather obliquely is that sometimes you are allowed to send people copyrighted books, the key thing being whether or not the copyright holder(s) allow it.

Nit-picker! OK, HarryT could have added 'without the copyright owner's permission.' I think that was implied.

Cory Doctorow, of course, has given you that permission, as he's released most (all?) of his books under a Creative Commons licence that allows redistribution.
