I see your Don Quixote, and raise you a picture of me with Picasso posing by his original DQ sketch... which he gifted to me.

For the bible, I raise you video footage of me unearthing the previously undiscovered bible in an Austrian castle ruin, with professional archeologists surrounding me in awe of my find.

Okay, I guess I'm done with these analogies! (Anybody got a Dos Equis?)

Signs of status change over time. Once it was land... once it was gold... once it was slaves... once it was books. (Right now, I'd say celebrity is today's sign of status.) What will it be next? Experience? Health? Social media contacts? Gardening prowess? How many microbrews you've sampled? Who knows?

But I don't think large physical displays of anything will be the status symbols of the future. I think we're moving past that.

You are impressed by expensive methods of trying to commit suicide

It does, but in another way: It displays the owners' taste in technology and economy, possibly a elevating those interests above media specifics like genres.
Tastes in generes inform me much better if I actually want to deal with said person, or duck and run ASAP than the tastes in the tools.

It would be an impressive point on the insurance bill yes. Since I can't spanish, nor have the wish to read the bible folio sized it wouldn't mean nothing to me.

Me, I'm rarely in a position of trying to find out about a person first by examining their home; I just speak to them directly to learn what kind of person they are. And as the web enables more and more personal communication whilst simultaneously isolating us from each other physically, I suspect that learning about people through the objects in their homes will become less common than learning about them through their social media profiles. (That is, after all, how most of the people on this forum know each other, isn't it?)
