Wait a second. So what you are saying is that you are starting off with text (aozora bunko format?) and then you are going to convert into PDF?

In that situation, you should just convert it to a Kindle sized PDF, and then that will work fine on a Kindle or other 6" PDF reader.

http://a2k.aill.org/text.html <-- will allow you to convert Aozora Bunko formatted text to Kindle-sized PDF.

This will not allow you to use a dictionary though.

Oh, is that what is going on? I did almost ask what exactly the OP was intending to do, actually.

I hadn't heard of that site, but anyway, the best thing would be to download the .txt format that has the furigana "in-line", convert it to .html with e.g. Word, convert it to .epub with Sigil, and read it on Cool Reader.

I tried it out right now with "Night on the Galactic Railroad" (1927 public domain). Works fine. I will attach the epub, in case anyone wants to test. It displays left to right not up to down, but I find that easier anyway. Works fine and the dictionary still works of course.

I opened it in the native Nook reader, but there's no Japanese font apparently. Just mojibake.

I made some tests on my two year old Boox 60 reader.
The vertical Japanese pdf files created with the help of the Aozora-Kindle site mentioned above are displayed nicely on the Boox 60, Kindle 3 and PRS-650 (non-Japanese version) without problem. The following imade is a screen capture on the Boox 60. It is the first page of of Yuugao section of the story of Genji translated into modern Japanese by a passionate lover and female poet Akiko Yosano.

The Boox 60 has StarDict function which works with a pdf file. The problem is with the dictionary window which is horizontal and has to be removed when you keep reading the vertical text;

If you are OK with horizontal Japanese texts, the horizontal dictionary window should not be of a very much problem, as it automatically keeps itself away from reading area. The following is an example of a pdf text re-flowed

Lastly the Night of the Galactic Railroad downloaded from the above link.
Boox 60 can handle many type of formats including ePub.

Thanks to the fact that Japanese kanji words do not decline, the dictionary function on the Boox 60 works OK with my mother tongue. But it fails to work with German words miserably, as it cannot detect declined and conjugated word forms.

According to this site: http://www.kobu.com/docs/epub/index-en.htm Japanese with the correct flow displays on eReaders supporting epub version 3.

Now the question is which readers are version 3?

from Aozora Bunko you can convert the text to EPUB or MOBI (ie for nook, sony, etc. or kindle).
you'll have the kanji any size you please with a reflow.
the dictionary won't work on the kindle because the kindle doesn't select the right kanji.
i don't know if the sony or nook have a japanese dictionary

Hi Nukito, I know this is a pretty old post but I just want to add that the 'new' Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (released in Japan in November) supports Japanese very well.

I doesn't come with a Japanese to English dictionary though. That being said, there is now a J/E dictionary that you can purchase on Amazon.com and install. I created it myself since I had the same need as you
