In defense of America (America, f&&k yeah)

THere are [probably lots of countries whose inhabitants are largely ignorant of geography. Is it really clear that Americans are the worst?

There are studies showing that kids in public schools in Asian and European countries consistently outperform kids in public schools in the US when it comes to math, sciences, and other subjects. Make of that what you will. *shrug*

They can probably find Singapore on a map.

The issue isn't "details of world geography" but "basic awareness that there *is* a world geography." 20% of US students can't find their own country on a globe.

Those comparisons are bogus. Most countries track their students and the only ones who take those tests are the college prep kids. In the US every child takes those tests. So the US scores include kids in resource support, ESL, and other similar programs while the Asian countries and most European countries are testing only the kids going to college. Meaning that their scores are inflated.

I took part in a test like that when I was 15, granted it wasn't exactly yesterday. Still, they couldn't know if I was going to college.

By 15 kids are tracked in many schools. You might not know it but it has happened. Normally the kids who are not college bound are taking easier classes by the ninth grade. Kids going to college will have the harder math, science, language arts, a foreign language, and some type of social science. Due to learning disabilities my school tried to wave science, math, and foreign language for me. My parents would not let them but it sure as hell knew about tracking far sooner then most of my classmates.

In the UK and Canada, assessment exams are set as early as Grade 4, on a universal basis. I'm fairly sure that's also true of most of Europe, and even more so in many Asian countries. In many cases the results of test scores are what drive parental choice of schools, whether that's a good or a bad thing is a different topic.

You think they have problem with the UK - how many Americans know Russia is in Europe?

And lets not get started on Kazakhstan.

I think Kazakhstan is kind of famous these days, thank to a certain journalist.

I can't be bothered to look it up, but I'm pretty sure it's in Europe, isn't it? They take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, at any rate .
