It's totally normal and the level of noticeability depends on individual eyesight, reading distance, light, font... I find it a tad (a tiny tad) bothersome on the odd occasion when I'm reading outside in bright sunlight. Otherwise, I never even notice it.

I'll put it like this: the text produced by my Kobo Touch is at least as clear as anything I've seen come out of an ink jet printer. I think the OP is being overly critical.

E-ink screens used are only 800x600 resolution, or 167 PPI. At such a low resolution, attempting to render complicated fonts without anti-alising would leave noticeably visible jagged edges. It would look terrible for fonts that have serif end and/or variable width strokes.. (it would be possible to create fixed bitmapped fonts that looked great and would be perfectly clear with no aliasing. Strange that I' haven't seen any e-ink reader try such, unless that's the Kindle's secret.)

I've noticed it too, but I *do* notice a difference if you make the font larger - that larger the font size, the crisper the letters.
I uploaded Arial into the reader, and I find it gives a nice clear font, but again at a larger size. I think I've got my font slider button 1/3 of the way to the right. I have old, tired eyes. ![]() |
