bringing this idea over from the other thread, anybody want to tackle it?
I'd buy a copy

Which is a crying shame IMO.

I think I would actually prefer that to Scientology for the most part, or at least it would make for more entertaining competition than the usual religious competition.

Actually considering the other thread, maybe that would be a great idea for a alt-history. Where it really did get off the ground in competition with Hubbards religion. I'd read it at any rate, knowing Heinlein or not it would still be an interesting read."

I can recommend The Year of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson.

New author

Try this one
Crossing the line, by Peter Pauzé. Starts as usual Confederate States won the Civil war, but it has a new intriguing twist.
No spoilers, sorry. Worth to be read.

I got it used. Here on Maui, I can get some scifi for 10 cents at Friends of the Library. That might be where I first found David Weber. Now I have to pay full price because I can't stand to wait.

Slightly off-topic, but sort of AH related, though on TV rather than book form: Awake. This is personal Alternate History. A police detective gets in a car accident and either his son or his wife dies. He lives alternate days in slightly different realities where one or the was killed and the other lives. I enjoyed the first five episodes. Not sure how well the writing will hold up, but not bad so far.

Here are a couple favorites of mine:
The Arabesk trilogy by Jon Courtenay Grimwood--Pashazade, Effendi, and Felaheen. Alternate history of a slightly different sort, which takes place in a 21st Century where the Ottoman Empire never fell.
Amazon Kindle link: http://www.amazon.com/Pashazade-Arab.../dp/B000FCJZHM

And a classic, which may not be available as an ebook: For Want Of A Nail: If Burgoyne Had Won At Saratoga, by Robert Sobel, which posits a world where the American Revolution failed and the revolutionaries emigrated to Mexico. It reads like a history textbook, complete with footnotes and (fake) references.

I'm half way through "Island in the Sea of Time." Regrettably, this is not a great book.

The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde perhaps?

Quote:
In Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection. But when someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature and plucks Jane Eyre from the pages of Brontë's novel, Thursday is faced with the challenge of her career. Fforde's ingenious fantasy—enhanced by a Web site that re-creates the world of the novel—unites intrigue with English literature in a delightfully witty mix.

Amazon's Alternate History best selling list.

Guns of the South was written by Harry Turtledove, not Harry Harrison.
