He might be reading white text on a dark background, that's how I did all the reading on my phone (mostly called nightmode). I had such a problem with a book (not from Smashwords) I wanted to read in Aldiko, it showed me a completely black screen and I had no clue what was wrong until I tried switching to the normal "black text on white" theme.
