Interesting. Well, there was a similar 99$ sale on the website and best buy a little over a month ago.

And yes I agree, rooting on the T1 is fairly easy (still took me awhile though since it was my first time rooting).

I took my 350 that i bought about a week and a half ago to see if i could get it at $59.99. They were unaware of them being an additional 25%. The Best Buys in my area dont have any left(the one I have was the last in my area as far as I know) I can only assume its only for the best buys in areas that have a larger inventory. I did check my the shelves near the registers to double check, there were none.

Wow I am surprised some best buys have that many. I live in Michigan and the 4 best buys I go to have none.

I'm waiting for Target or Best Buy to clearance the lighted cover. $49 is too steep when the device itself is only $99. It may be cheap compared to Amazon's covers at $59, but it's not cheap enough for my taste.

Geez, why isn't this at my local Best Buy? My 350 is slightly broken.

I was able to pick up a PRS-T1 at a local FRYs in Southern California a few weeks back for $79, so I don't see the $99 dollar price that Best Buy is listing as anything special.

This was for a brand new in the box PRS-T1, not refurbished or open item.

In any case, I have totally given up on Best Buy, and no longer even bother with them, because, in my experience, 90 plus percent of the time, their special 'SALE' items are NOT IN STOCK (they are just trying to get you into the store for a bait-and-switch rip-off.)

Still, having had a chance to play with my PRS-T1, I do agree that it would still be an outstanding deal at $99 so if you were lucky enough to find one at that price . . .

The T1 was a cheaper version, made to compete with the lower prices of Amazon. But, truth is, you can't compete.. if you offer hardware that is comparable to a Kindle, you get hammered on not having the Amazon ecosystem, which works so much better... What I am trying to say is that SONY had a hardware advantage (until the x50 series) and they decided to give that up to compete on price.

On top of that, the T1 was plagued by problems for quite a while after release. I am not surprised the result is a desperate, sclerotic pricing roller coaster.

We have given SONY for dead in the ereader market more than once, so I know better than to read too much into this. But I believe that hardware providers have no future in this business - it's all about making a buck on book sales to subsidize a cheap device (which has been the Amazon model all along). And SONY just can't compete at that game, not with its mediocre and US-only SONY store, not with the garbage of software that it is offering.

SONY's only hope is to go back to producing superior hardware for a market niche.
Here's something from a blog:

Source:
http://goodereader.com/blog/electron...buy-for-99-99/

tldr: eink readers aren't profitable anymore, Sony is discontinuing to focus on tablets. A commenter said that it could be Sony is releasing new Harry Potter one.

Personally, I don't think Sony is discontinuing the eink readers because bhphotovideo and other places didn't say that it's being discontinued.

In the future, I would like to see higher end eink readers from Sony (providing they are continuing to make them), relegating cheapie ones to Amazon, Nook, and Kobo. For example, a Retina Display-ish eink reader with higher resolution than what are out right and sizes bigger than 6 in. Only the iRiverHD has higher resolution display out right now and it's being clearanced too.

They did that, remember the x50's ?

And they went because they cost too much to make....

I thought the x50 is exactly what Sony needed to make, but it was way overpriced compared to Kindle and Nook. I don't think it was that they cost too much to make. If Sony makes something like x50 but price it a a premium (but not overpriced) they can make a niche for themselves.

Kindle, Kobo, Nook are all making me-too ereaders. If Sony comes out a lead in technology (like they did with a touch reader two years before the rest), Sony can do well in the market. I can't imagine Kindle, Nook or Kobo coming out with a high resolution e-ink reader or large screen reader, basically technologies to drive the ereaders forward.

Got one for $87 at Best Buy in Manchester, MO, USA. Their website inicates full price, but check store availability. Look for "in store only". These are very light weight with a good set of features.

They had four more as of last night (if local and interested).

Unfortuantely. or not... eReader pricing is on a race to the bottom. If Sony wants to continue to market the devices it has to compete on price. The low prices for the readers are why eBooks have finally gained traction.

I wanted to buy a 950 but the price deterred me. The T1 price hit my sweet spot. Higher priced eReaders are going to be for specialty cases. Reading comics, textbooks, etc. I might pay more for an eReader with features I really desire, but then I am not the average eBook consumer. I bought my first eReader in 1998, for $500... and I still use it occasionally.

Hey, I know this area! The website says they are in-stock at both Manchester & 141 and Manchester & Clarkson. They are sold out where I live. I bought my first ereader, the Sony 500, at the Borders store at Manchester & New Ballwin in 2007 when I was on a business trip to STL! I have a friend in Wildwood looking for an ereader so I'll tell her about these deals. She was leaning towards the Kindle because of the price.

The price is pretty good. Wish I'd picked this up when it was $75 (after selling a bonus $25 Sony gift card..)
