I have to go with the idea it is the individual's responsibly if they are distracted [will exempt those with ADD having just spent 22 years with someone with ADD]
My computers/tablets/you name its are NOT allowed in any way to be intrusive. I will get to what I get to when I get to it. The only pop ups I allow are the ones I set for a specific task that I want to be notified about. Then they are removed as soon as the task is done. Nothing is allowed to run but the tasks I am running. I believe in speed not in bells and whistles. My sister on the other hand complains she can't get anything done and her computers/tablets/you name it are so slow. I went in to fix the computer the other day "Sis? Why do you have 4 music programs running?" They are?" "I'll remove them from running on start up" "OH don't do that. I just want them to start when I click on a file and I want to be able to download things without a problem. Hey why are all my files corrupted when I download them?" Maybe because she had 32 programs running when they didn't need to be all seeking internet use? And pop ups.. Lord have mercy. Pop ups. I barely got the thing done I went in to do. Everything and its brother was popping up and telling me things she didn't even need to know. If you ask for distractions [allow the programs to run all the time] don't complain you can't get anything done or are distracted. It's your own fault. And she would only let me kill the stupid music programs. She didn't even know she had sharing programs running. On dial up no less. ![]() |

The answer to the article-writer's dilemma is to toggle the button with the little airplane, or the one with the signal bars, or whatever on his particular device. Or, if he prefers reading on a Kindle, just read on the Kindle and stop inventing reasons why other people shouldn't be reading on the device of their choice. |

Btw, sounds like you need to upgrade your phones OS, as Apple improved the notification system. Nonny |

Which only really matters if you read on multiple devices and want to be able to switch back and forth. My NC only ever has the WiFi on long enough to sync new books, then it goes off again.

Well, and for backup also. I would for example not like to loose my notes and markings just because my Kindle broke.

Just making the point that if you only read on a single device, constant network availability really isn't needed. |

Eh, directly after something changes. So always. Backup is not enough to take once a week.

People buy devices for personal reasons and for differing purposes. Having to cripple a tablet to read without distraction is, in my opinion, rather silly. Last edited by sabredog; 03-11-2012 at 10:50 PM. Reason: quotation fixed |

Cripple... turning off a feature I'm not using, which will only drain the battery and may actually interfere with the feature I am using, is crippling. Do I also cripple my house when I turn off the light in the kitchen because I'm planning to be in the living room? |

Just accept that other people might dare have a differing opinion to you or use a device in a differing way. Using an exaggerated example does not further your argument a jot. |

Ahhh, but if you read my earlier post on this thread you would have known that I purchased my iPAD for the express reason that it is used for my hobby references and comics. My ereader for novels.

You are welcome to use your tablet and/or ereader any way you like. It's just a bit ridiculous to suggest that anyone who has different priorities for their device has "crippled" it. A tablet is a computer, and computers do more and other things than access the internet. Personally, the only notifications I receive on my tablet are app updates. I find no need to receive notifications in stereo from both my phone and my tablet. If I want to respond on my tablet, it's easy enough to jump into the appropriate app.
