That Polymer Vision is exactly what I visioned when I first heard about e-Readers. Imagine my disappointment at first, but I did get on the bandwagon nevertheless. Any idea when there will be an actual product released? Also, will they be able to compete price wise? The entrance point is getting lower and lower. I doubt people will pay $199 for the device (I would but very few consider me "people").

price point being a major concern of course , especiallyafter the last year. but to my understanding their "unbreakable", rollable, foldable display doesn't cost much more that the glass displays it could replace and the difference is mainly volume. their display is also a bit brighter because it has less layers in front of the display.
the current generation the are able to produce is a 6 inch 32 gray scale pearl type capacitive touch display. they can produce it in volume and they are even marketing it a bit to other OEMs for use in traditional non-bendy readers for its durability. hence the ball drop test video etc. I know there was some interest in it from several vendors but I do not know if anything has gone past discussions with any of them. PV themselves were really on the verge of retail production of the Readius when the financial troubles hit them, a result of the major investor being involved in a ponzi scheme and not any actual trouble at PV. They had already test run several hundred through production. They have built functioning prototypes of not only the one depicted in the video i linked to previously but also of the "dream device" depicted on their website http://www.polymervision.com/site/page?view=about. |

The need for "Global" type rollup displays is going to be lower than a cheap/light ruggedized outdoors-readable display. The vertical/industrial markets would go ape for something like that. Maybe even the military. And they would make great user interfaces for factory-floor devices where refresh rate doesn't much matter. Ideally, they'd want color (which would be a fit for k-6 ereaders!) but a lot of apps can use it as is today. They just need to kick the futurists to the side and just look at what people are doing *today* in the factory floor and industrial mobility markets. I think the're demo-ing it to the wrong people. ![]() |

that's amusing- i just finished reading this article concerning industrial uses for Eink displays.
and of course the US Military is involved with the Arizona state flexible display lab but Polymer Vision is quite a bit ahead of whats going on there in terms of shippable product Last edited by Dulin's Books; 01-25-2012 at 11:39 PM. |

eInk does seem to have a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of their tech, no?
And they are actively looking for new uses for it beyond the current cash cow reader market. Sometimes the success or failure of a technology rests more on the quality of its management than its intrinsic merits. (I always wondered about Polymer vision focusing on cellphones in their prototype. That's a nasty business to break into.) One case I'm wondering about is Mirasol, what with Qualcomm's recent purchase of Pixtronix. The purchase of an alternative to Mirasol seems to suggest the issues are with the tech, but the way it was hyped and vapor-marketted has me wondering if it is simply immature and management over-reached...
